University of California, Santa Barbara - UCSB Overview

  About Greek Life at UCSB

Tucked right on the Pacific coast in Goleta, UCSB is a large UC campus with a student body that leans heavily into its beach town setting — and the Greek system here fits right into that laid-back but socially active culture. It's not the biggest Greek scene in the UC system, but it's genuinely present and has a real foothold in campus social life.

On the fraternity side, IFC chapters include familiar national names like Sigma Chi, Sigma Nu, Sigma Phi Epsilon, Alpha Tau Omega, Kappa Sigma, Delta Tau Delta, Zeta Beta Tau, and Sigma Pi, among others. Panhellenic sororities cover a solid range of national organizations — Alpha Chi Omega, Alpha Delta Pi, Alpha Epsilon Phi, Alpha Phi, Delta Delta Delta, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Kappa Alpha Theta, Kappa Kappa Gamma, and Pi Beta Phi are all represented. Beyond IFC and Panhellenic, there are also Multicultural Greek Council organizations active on campus, including Lambda Sigma Gamma, Gamma Zeta Alpha, Sigma Theta Psi, and Chi Delta Theta, which rounds out the community considerably.

Recruitment at UCSB follows a pretty standard format. Panhellenic formal recruitment typically runs in the fall and is a structured, multi-round process. IFC rush tends to be more informal by comparison, with events spread across the semester. The MGC chapters recruit on their own timelines and with their own processes, which are generally less structured and more relationship-based.

Housing is a real factor here. UCSB sits next to Isla Vista, the famously dense student neighborhood where a lot of off-campus housing is clustered. Many fraternities have houses in IV, and that's a big part of where social activity happens. Not every chapter has a dedicated house, though, so it varies by organization.

UCSB's Greek community participates in philanthropy events throughout the year, with chapters tied to their national foundations' causes as well as local fundraisers. The school's overall culture is social and outdoors-oriented, and Greek organizations tend to reflect that — events often take advantage of the beach proximity and the IV setting. Greek life here isn't the only social infrastructure on campus, but it's a consistent and active part of it.
