University of Delaware - UD Overview

  About Greek Life at UD

The University of Delaware is a mid-size public research university in Newark, Delaware — close enough to Philadelphia and the Mid-Atlantic corridor that it draws students from all over the Northeast — and the Greek system reflects that energy with a solid, well-established presence on campus.

There are several governing councils active at UD. The Interfraternity Council (IFC) oversees the traditional men's fraternities, while the Panhellenic Council covers the NPC sororities. The National Pan-Hellenic Council (NPHC) represents the historically Black fraternities and sororities, and the Multicultural Greek Council (MGC) brings in a number of culturally-based organizations as well. That spread means the Greek community here isn't one-dimensional — there are chapters rooted in different traditions, interests, and identities.

The chapter list is extensive. You've got IFC stalwarts like Sigma Chi, Phi Gamma Delta, Sigma Alpha Epsilon, and Lambda Chi Alpha alongside Panhellenic chapters like Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Kappa Alpha Theta, and Tri Delta. NPHC organizations including Alpha Kappa Alpha, Kappa Alpha Psi, Delta Sigma Theta, and others have a presence too, as do MGC groups like Pi Alpha Phi and Lambda Theta Alpha. It's a broad mix across the board.

Formal recruitment for IFC fraternities and Panhellenic sororities typically happens in the fall, though some chapters also do spring recruitment. Panhellenic recruitment tends to be more structured, with a set schedule of events and rounds. IFC recruitment is generally more informal in comparison, with chapters hosting their own events on their own timelines.

Housing is part of the picture at UD. A number of fraternities have chapter houses, some of which are located in rows near the main part of campus, and those houses tend to be central to the social side of things for those chapters. Not every chapter has a dedicated house, so the experience can vary depending on which organization you're looking at.

Greek life at UD is a real part of campus social culture without being the only thing going on. Newark has a lively bar and restaurant scene on Main Street, and the university has plenty of other student organizations and activities. That said, Greek chapters are active with philanthropy events, formals, and campus involvement throughout the year, and collectively they represent a meaningful chunk of campus life.
