Gettysburg College - GC Overview

  About Greek Life at GC

Gettysburg College is a small liberal arts school in south-central Pennsylvania, and its Greek system is a genuinely central part of campus social life. With a total undergraduate enrollment hovering around 2,500, having over a dozen active fraternities and sororities means a pretty significant chunk of students are involved. This isn't a school where Greek life is tucked away in a corner — it's front and center.

On the fraternity side, IFC chapters include well-known nationals like Sigma Alpha Epsilon, Phi Delta Theta, Lambda Chi Alpha, Phi Gamma Delta, Alpha Tau Omega, and several others. Panhellenic sororities include Alpha Delta Pi, Chi Omega, Delta Gamma, Gamma Phi Beta, Alpha Omicron Pi, Sigma Sigma Sigma, and others. There's also a presence from NPHC through Sigma Gamma Rho, which adds some council diversity to the system.

Rush and recruitment at Gettysburg tend to follow a pretty standard small-school pattern — it's structured but personal. Because the campus is small, you probably already know people in the chapters you're looking at before you ever go through formal recruitment. That's just how it works at a school this size. Word of mouth and existing social connections play a bigger role here than at a large state school where you might be one of thousands going through the process.

Most of the fraternities have houses on or near campus, which makes them natural social hubs, especially on weekends. Sororities at Gettysburg don't typically have standalone residential houses in the same way, which is fairly common for Panhellenic chapters in Pennsylvania given state regulations around sorority housing.

Philanthropy is a real part of the culture here. Chapters regularly put on events tied to their national philanthropy causes, and those events tend to draw broad campus participation — not just Greeks. The school itself encourages involvement and community engagement, so Greek organizations fit into that broader culture reasonably well. Gettysburg also has a strong athletics tradition as a Division III school in the Centennial Conference, and there's plenty of overlap between student-athletes and Greek members.

Overall, the system here is active and well-established for a school of this size, and it's been part of the Gettysburg social fabric for a long time.
