It would be the A that represents “alpha” as a letter, not the a at the end of the word. So gamma phi is “fye” because the letter G precedes it. Sorry if that’s confusing but think of it in terms of actual Greek letters. In any case, it’s probably just what their founders wanted when they picked the letters. I did see a recruitment video from a small school where the girls pronounced it fye and it was super weird.
