See, @Well, I also happen to be from outside of DC, and there is CERTAINLY a difference in cost between the inner suburbs like Arlington/McLean and the outer suburbs in places like Prince William County or the edges of Fairfax. My family lives in a small 3-bedroom 15 mins from DC and for half its price we could have a 5-bedroom mansion in the further suburbs. Every teacher at my high school lived ~30 mins away because you can't afford to live in my school district on a teacher's salary. I could go on. I do know people with horses and pools further out, but they ALSO have nice houses in Georgetown and go to private/boarding schools. That's where the really rich, affluent DC people live. Same with people living on the Upper East Side versus living in Westchester County - WC is probably 10x cheaper and many more 'middle class' people can afford to live there. It's a socioeconomic pattern you can follow nearly everywhere.
