When I was 11 and when I was 14. Both times incidentally, when I started new schools. I thought being skinnier would make me more popular and prettier, and I did look a bit better but I didn't feel very happy. Thankfully, I had enough self-awareness to bust out of the cycle (for now) in college. My parents were always very strict on me and I was expected to get straight As and win every soccer game, so the food that went into me was the only thing I could control. Now that I'm in college, I have more say in my life and have learned to deal with depression in a more constructive way. It's still very difficult to force myself to eat when I am feeling sad or stressed. While it's certainly true that environment can contribute to eating disorders, I have never personally had any pressure from my sorority to diet or anything like that. If anything, I've found other girls like me and we're fighting this mental disease together.
