If you're an upperclassman looking to rush I HIGHLY suggest formal rush because: 1. When you COB you're significantly limited in terms of houses offering COB. During fall rush you're able to meet all the houses and make decisions based on all of them. During COB you may miss out on an opportunity to join a house more suitable for you. 2. Houses will be more lenient towards upperclassmen during fall rush than COB. Assuming you're going into your sophomore year, by the time you COB you're almost half way done with your college career... And houses don't want to invest time, money, and effort into a girl who's only going to be an active for two years. That being said, if you do fall rush you have more time to be an active thus you're more valuable as a PNM rushing in the fall than a PNM rushing in the spring. To answer your question about what an upperclassman would need to do to get a bid through COB... You essentially need to be a very strong PNM. Good grades (preferably over a 3.5), good involvement on campus, close friends inside the house, and a clean reputation. It's not impossible to get a bid through COB as an upperclassman but it'll probably be easier to get a bid through formal rush.
