Dresses don't need to come down to your knees. I think a good point of reference is that if a dress ends or goes a little past your finger tips when you arms are by your side then it should be appropriate. This is a good reference because it works for every girl with any type of body (short, tall, average, etc). Also, you can always get your clothes tailored. I know extending the hem of a dress can be a little harder but if you still can't find anything long enough then it's worth a shot to see if a tailor can do anything... Same with any girls who are shorter - having the hem taken up is very easily.
