Having friends will most definitely help! Every sorority preranks girls, so grabbing coffee with them and making it clear (but not pushy) that you are rushing will help as they can flag your name earlier making it easier to move past the zoom rounds. As for the sophomore piece, it is all up to personality and fit, if you wouldn’t be a good fit as a sophomore, probably same is true if you were a freshman so I wouldn’t say it disadvantages you so much in that way as in the end year usually isn’t the dealbreaker, it would be more so academics and social. For some sororities though, know that some members host freshman in pre rush events (not directly affiliated with the sorority), and most of these events are aimed at first years with older friends in the sorority living in Granville. In that case it may make it hard as even if you are invited to those events, it may feel weird to be the same age as the hosts (or may not to each their own). But for a select group of sororities not having a connection might make it hard for your name to get on their radar and moved in subsequent rounds given such high numbers of pnms. All in all, your personality will shine through the most during this process. So your class year shouldn’t matter. And I’d encourage you to stick with it until the end, you only need one place to call home (and COB is now basically impossible).
