How inclusive is sorority row?

by: Asking4afriend

Can an active member of a sorority become a mother during her time in college? Since sororities are becoming for inclusive, I am wondering if a collegiate woman can give birth and still be active in her sorority?

As of now, most sororities cannot exclude anyone so, have a baby and enjoy college!

As it should be.

Why would a young woman want to still be in a sorority after she gives birth?

Correct me if I’m wrong but it’s in most sorority bylaws that you can’t have a baby and be active in a sorority. The bylaw stems from the old belief that babies shouldn’t be born out of wedlock and no one is married and in a sorority anyway

You are wrong about "the old belief", so I will correct you. Sorority membership requires being a full-time student while maintaining a required GPA as well as substantial time, activity, and financial commitments. NONE of that is conducive to being a mother, especially of an infant. Also to consider is the fact that many members also have part-time jobs to help with expenses, and chapters with houses often have a live-in requirement for their members. A child should, and hopefully would, be a mother's top priority and she would need a lot of help just to get through school after having a baby. It is not being realistic to think that sorority membership and motherhood mix, not to mention the messed up priorities. For these reasons, if a member in good standing with no other issues should have a baby, married or not, she would most likely be granted alumnae status.
