low gpa-should or shouldn't rush?

by: bamabound

I am attending Alabama in the fall and am really interested in rushing. Unfortunately my overall high school GPA will be around a 2.7. (I go to a rigorous classwork school in northern virginia but I'm not sure if that counts for anything) I also have a 24 ACT and 1620 SAT score. I am a triple legacy for tri delta and am also involved in a lot of extra-curricular activities with and outside of school. Will rushing with such a low GPA ruin my chances of getting a good bid? I am nervous to wait until sophomore year to rush because I am coming from out of state and want to meet new friends and people as soon as possible. Does my low GPA make me need to rush as a sophomore or do I have a chance as a freshman going into rush at all?

a lot of houses have a minimum gpa that they cut off at. mine is a 3.0, although it's different for every house. 2.7 is pretty low, and you will get cut from a lot of houses after the first round. but if you're pretty and have a good personality and were involved in a lot of things in high school you may have a chance, but you may receive a bid from a "bottom" house because they compromise grades a lot more than the "top" houses. tri delt is a house that is very focused on grades so i'm not sure how that will turn out for you.

The grade report for the sororities is available somewhere on Panhellenic website. It shows you all the average entering GPA's for each sorority's pledge class. Some houses have traditionally been more likely to take grade risks, but I won't name them, you can check out the grade info for yourself. We cut anyone below a 3.2. It may be worth trying recruitment as a freshman. Every house on campus is awesome in their on way. Good luck!

If you are open to ANY chapter, have a great personality, nice looks, etc., you should give fall rush a try. Be prepared to only have 1 or 2 houses after first round. (This will be hard to experience while others in your dorm will be going to many houses.)

It's possible you will find a home.... Or at least you will meet some great women that you would not otherwise have the opportunity to meet. Focus on meeting lots of people -- freshman and upper class.

You can always rush again after you have had an opportunity to work on your studies.

Unfortuently with such a low grade point average your options will be limited. Speaking strictly from the fall 2015 grade report some of the houses who seem to accept girls with lower grades are gamma phi, alpha phi, zeta, and dz. If you're very pretty and have a good personality other houses such as kappa, dg, pi phi, and kd might be willing to take you into consideration. I don't really see other houses making an exception although they might. I rushed as a sophomore and while I do wish I would have done it freshman year I had a great rush experience. If you rush sophomore year you could work on your GPA, be involved on campus, and make connections with girls in houses and therefore maximize your options. If I could redo it I would rush freshman year!!! It's a bit weird being an upperclassman among so many freshman. Good luck!

Yow.
We wouldn't touch you.
Spend your freshman year bringing up your GPA, meeting people and making connections in the house.
With a decent GPA and friends inside houses, pledging as a sophomore should be no problem.

My roomate rushed with a 2.8 she is VERY cute and stylish and can hold a conversation with anyone. She was cut severely after the first round but after that kept all her houses. She ended up preffing 2 old row houses and 1 non old row but still good house. I also know a cute and fun girl who rushed with the same GPA and ended up only with gamma phi... It's just up to you if you wanna go through it and take that risk. Hope that helps

Only a few lower grades PNMs will be accepted in G Phi. You will be lucky to get their house or any others.

I hate to see someone say "only Gamma Phi" since that implies they're not very good. Truthfully all the houses here are full of amazing girls. I don't know if Gamma Phi would take someone with a 2.7 and a 24 (pretty low) but if they give you a bid you'd be very fortunate and you should be awfully excited.

A 2.7 is low, especially if you don't have a close connection to the house. I suggest you make your grades, then rush as a sophomore.

Get some rec letters! Maybe do some interesting volunteer work and get some involvement in your community over the summer. By doing that, you will show that while you may not have the grades you still have good stuff to offer. You might experience harsher cuts, but keep an open mind about ALL houses. Get some cute rush outfits and make sure you look put together as well.

With grades that low, the might invite her back once, but will probably drop her after that.
