legacy status question

by: legacy

I've heard different things about being a legacy. I am a legacy for multiple chapters and I'm wondering exactly what being a legacy gets you. Do you get a leg up? Or is it just some fun little coincidence that doesn't help you at all? I've heard all sorts of things.

Some sororities value legacies more than others. Each house has plenty of them coming through every year, therefore you are not guaranteed a bid to that house even though you are a legacy. Usually it just allows you to be invited back for philanthropy round, and then they decide whether or not to keep you based on gpa and whether or not they can see you becoming a member.

The definition of a legacy varies by sorority. All sororities accept the sister or daughter of an initiate in good standing. Many also accept granddaughters. Even fewer accept great-granddaughters, and maybe two accept nieces. But since recruitment is so huge, each house has a enough legacies going through recruitment to fill two or three pledge classes. So, in that sense, it doesn't help you very much.

I don't know the legacy policies for all the houses, but it seems to be pretty similar across the board--legacy status gets you a courtesy invitation back to Philanthropy Round. After that, it's up to you to make it through to Preference Round. If you get preffed by your legacy house, you automatically appear at the top of the bid list.

My younger sister and I are in the same sorority at different schools. She goes to a much smaller liberal arts school (maybe 6000 students total. Pledge classes are generally in the mid-thirties), and while they almost always have legacies going through recruitment, there's only maybe five each year. Legacy PNMs almost always get bids from their legacy house at my sister's school. That just isn't possible at Alabama.

Probably any house that's considered "lower" makes more of an effort to keep legacies. I wouldn't say the other houses value them less, but gamma phi or theta who have maybe 40 legacies going through as opposed to several hundred have a higher chance at bidding a larger percentage of their legacies

Legacy usually just gets you a courtesy invite to second round. I did pledge my legacy house though, just depends if the house sees you as a fit.
