Well, it's harder to determine here because most if not all of our sororities are at least decent nationally (lots of chapters, pretty high performing around the country, etc). However if you compare, say, gamma phi or chi o to a sorority we don't have here like theta phi alpha or alpha sigma tau, you'll see that gphi and chi o have more chapters, more members, and more physical houses along with a better overall reputation than ast and tpa

It just means that they have strong alumnae chapters and a large presence in all regions of the country (West, Midwest, Northeast, South). It's only really important if you expect that you'll move to a different region and want to join an alumnae chapter (or heaven forbid, the Junior League).
For example, Tri Delt, KD, and Phi Mu are pretty (in)famous for having strong chapters in the South but they're not strong in the North at all.
You should just go with whatever sorority you love though. Having a happy and successful 4 years at university will affect your life way more than joining a good alumnae group.

-- Strong communications and PR with all members and community

Truthfully it doesn't mean anything. It's like the saying "all politics are local." All rankings of sororities are local. Some of the top houses in Alabama are low everywhere else. Does that mean pnms care and want to join Theta instead of Alpha Chi at Alabama because they're rated higher nationally? Absolutely not.
I would disagree that there is any all encompassing national type ratings. You can certainly do that with number of chapters, number of actives (which changes dramatically each year), amount of money donated to their foundation, etc. Truthfully, though, NONE OF THOSE THINGS has anything to do with which house a girl wants at any certain school.

Going off this comment, certain sororities are considered strong nationally due to a high number of well-established chapters and alumni groups, whereas sororities that may be considered "top" at Bama are weak nationally and may only be desirable at Bama or within the South.
