What does it mean to be a good sorority "nationally"?

Well, it's harder to determine here because most if not all of our sororities are at least decent nationally (lots of chapters, pretty high performing around the country, etc). However if you compare, say, gamma phi or chi o to a sorority we don't have here like theta phi alpha or alpha sigma tau, you'll see that gphi and chi o have more chapters, more members, and more physical houses along with a better overall reputation than ast and tpa

Going off this comment, certain sororities are considered strong nationally due to a high number of well-established chapters and alumni groups, whereas sororities that may be considered "top" at Bama are weak nationally and may only be desirable at Bama or within the South.

The five oldest sororities, making them "Old Row" nationally are:
ADPi
Phi-Mu
Pi-Phi
Theta
Kappa
(in that order)

Not to be mean, but that is one of the dumbest things I have read on here...and this site is filled with inane comments. National"old row"! Dear Lord!

It just means that they have strong alumnae chapters and a large presence in all regions of the country (West, Midwest, Northeast, South). It's only really important if you expect that you'll move to a different region and want to join an alumnae chapter (or heaven forbid, the Junior League).

For example, Tri Delt, KD, and Phi Mu are pretty (in)famous for having strong chapters in the South but they're not strong in the North at all.

You should just go with whatever sorority you love though. Having a happy and successful 4 years at university will affect your life way more than joining a good alumnae group.

I agree with all of that but there are some very strong Tri Delt chapters up North. KD and Phi Mu not so much.

I think tridelta and KD are equal nationally. Tri delta is very weak out west especially in CA and I do not consider them stronger than KD up north but I do think phi mu is only strong in the south. ...

Truthfully it doesn't mean anything. It's like the saying "all politics are local." All rankings of sororities are local. Some of the top houses in Alabama are low everywhere else. Does that mean pnms care and want to join Theta instead of Alpha Chi at Alabama because they're rated higher nationally? Absolutely not.

I would disagree that there is any all encompassing national type ratings. You can certainly do that with number of chapters, number of actives (which changes dramatically each year), amount of money donated to their foundation, etc. Truthfully, though, NONE OF THOSE THINGS has anything to do with which house a girl wants at any certain school.

Being a good sorority nationally means being an Alpha Phi or a Zeta. :)

^^^yes. Also, I think that 'being good nationally' means being at high profile schools and strong state schools as well. But Um is right....unless a sorority is on the ropes nationally, it doesn't affect their desirability on a local leve....and yes, APhi and Zeta are pretty girls and strong chapters pretty much anywhere you throw a dart on a map.

You're wrong! Aphi are sketch and bottom rung just about everywhere except a few west coast chapters and hardly anyone has heard of ZTA except in the south. Just saying get your facts straight

How shallow are you?? Are looks all that matter in your house? Yes? Then you have just proven you're an Alpha Phi.

To have a large presence nationally combines reputation, number of active chapters, number of members, as well as visibility. Some of the houses that are strongest nationally are Pi Phi, Kappa, ChiO, KD, Tri Delt, Theta

By: bama

It means a whole lot more than presence! Also putting time effort and money into your chapters and ensuring they recruit quality girls all over. Kappa DDD and Theta definitely can't say that. While there are Kappa and DDD chapters all over the place, there are more bottom chapters than top.
