old vs new row
by: RusheeWhat are the social differences? Like what are the benefits and downfalls of being Old Row vs New Row? Does it actually effect one's Panhellenic experience?
#1by: not much if at all
if it affects anyone, it's just what houses you are most likely to swap with. some fraternities are really tight with certain houses, and those usually go off of the whole old row/new row thing, so a new row house may not swap with an old row fraternity as much as an old row sorority. But honestly, it doesn't really matter, because you still have a full social calendar, a full PC, a beautiful house, and an amazing legacy with alums all over the country. It's not like other schools where the bottom houses don't make the numbers and don't swap with any fraternities and girls would rather drop than pledge them, and they risk closing down. What's considered a "top" house changes by everyone's opinions, and the only opinion that really matters is yours.

So true. The term old row refers to an alcoholic beverage company who licenses the name. Some houses are forbidden by nationals to be represented by alcohol. Old Row has a more Alabama-centric bias and New Row has more oos members.
Just going to say too that in my opinion the machine is on it's last few years. I predict it will be gone with the wind in the next few years.

Old Row designation has nothing to do with licensing/representation by an alcoholic beverage company, and not being Old Row is not because a chapter's nationals won't let them be "represented" by a beer distributor. This is a ridiculous myth spread around by people who aren't Old Row.
It is true that Old Row houses are more Alabama-centric than New Row chapters. Old Row houses pledge the top in-state girls and have highest return rates during recruitment. They still have lots out of state members too though.
