bama sorority fees?

by: Girl123

Hi. I am new to forum. I read a couple of posts, but I am still somewhat confused about sorority fees. My d is in the process of selecting a college. UA is in her top three. We visited last summer and found the campus to be beautiful and the people we met extended a warm southern hospitality to us.
My d has repeatedly expressed interest in joining a sorority and it seems like Greek life is big at UA and that it would be a good idea-particularly if she ends up going to UA. I think we would need to budget for sorority costs if she chooses UA. Personally, I had no interest in joining a sorority in college and I remain ignorant of much that goes on in regards to Greek life. I read a few older posts that explained that initiation fee is somewhat high to start with and gave an estimate on fees for living both in the house and not in the house (or posters shared their fee amounts).
While the initiation fee and fees when not living in the house might seem high, I don't understand that some feel fees are high when they live in the house. I saw estimates of fees of around $12k per year; if that includes food and living at sorority house, it seems reasonable to me. Can someone please share additional info? I understand there are quite a few incidental expenses- gifts, trip, formal, clothes- but are the dues higher than what I saw? Thanks in advance for any info you can share.

Dues will be higher for her freshman year. The $12,000.00 figure is somewhat accurate. I'll add another post with a ousted breakdown so the text doesn't run together here - like it does on a "reply" answer - and confuse you.

TOTAL COST ESTIMATES:

$6,000.00 - $12,000.00 per year (9 months or 36 weeks)
$3,000.00 - $6,000.00 per semester (4 1/2 months or 18 weeks)
$166.00 - $333.00 per week
$24.00 - $48.00 per day

I break it down this way so you can get a better idea for budgeting. The total costs include housing, meals, et cetera, which can be less than dorm or apartment living. Many, many girls have to work either part time jobs or jobs during breaks to help pay these costs. If your daughter will be working then the daily figures I gave are good goals for her. I have two friends who wait tables during breaks to help pay for their sorority costs. Some moms also get part time jobs for this reason. I just wanted to let you know that we aren't all rich kids!

Thanks so much M.!
Soo... I read the post on the most beautiful sorority houses (UA is in there twice!). In the post they state the number of members who live in the house. The number seems surprisingly low given the high number of current members in the chapter. I think I saw estimates of as many as 300???
Given the difference in this two numbers, would it be right to conclude that it is difficult to live in the house? Are there any typical rules about who lives in the house and who does not?
Also, since it appears that time spent living in the house would be limited by the number of beds, I think we should look at the cost of dues for those when not living at the house. Could anyone please share current estimate of those fees?
Thanks again for any help😌

Every house is different whether you get to live in the house. But it's not that hard to get in if you really want and you have good grades and very avtive in your house.
