hc queen
by: ???????????Why are certain sororities only backed for HC Queen???????I couldn't believe who I was told to vote for.

#13by: just saying
the girl greeks are voting for this year is truly a really awesome girl. she's super involved on campus and has basically put together her own philanthropy events after some really tough life events. she rocks so honestly you should just vote for her regardless of what you were told to do
#14by: Just a thought
When was the last time a machine "backed" a sorority girl for SGA president? Seems to me like it has been years. They toss a bone to the girls and let them rotate Homecoming Queen among the backed houses. Sounds insulting to me, the sororities don't need the machine, the machine needs them. I think it is time for the sororities to work together and call their own shots.
Fire away............

But how would the Machine even know who you voted for, or who didn't vote for their candidate? HC is campus wide voting, Machine can only control Greeks.
If people don't want the Machine around, then they need to stop doing the Machine's bidding. Simple as that.

The people posting on this thread are either very oblivious freshman or people who don't go to Alabama. Let's get some facts straight.
1. Not every fraternity and sorority are in the machine.
2. the Phi Mu girl is not the "Greek backed" candidate. She is the machine backed candidate. That doesn't make her any less deserving of the title (I've heard she's an awesome person) but nevertheless, she is the machine's chosen candidate.
3. It has NEVER been a secret who the machine candidate is so I don't know why people are trying to "expose" the poor girl. Anyone with half a brain can look around and see that the majority of fraternities and sororities are backing her, so common sense makes her the machine candidate.
4. The title normally cirvles through old row. Last year, the machine candidate was a tri delt, the year before a KD, the year before an AGD, and the year before another Phi Mu. They all won.
5. Houses that are in the machine are required to vote for their candidate. They have to send in email confirmation to their machine representative or else they get fined.
If you dislike the machine, get out and vote! That's the only way for their candidate not to win. Until this past spring, their was no organized movement against them so all other competitors fell flat. But now, there's real resistance.

So even if you're in the machine and your sorority is not one of those mentioned you can never be put up for anything like HC queen? What are we? I'M sure the Phi Mu is a great girl but if she is people will vote for her based on her own merits not because they are ordered to do so. Why not a DG or ADPI or any of the others. Why does it circulate through the same ones? If all are in the machine, that would be a turn every what 12 or 13 yrs depending on the number of sororities in the machine.

There a great girls in every sorority, and if it weren't for the machine every sorority would nominate a member for HoCo Queen an then entire greek community would divide their vote amongst up to 16 candidates. With this divide it is much more likely that a non-greek candidate wins because they get the majority of the non-greek vote since it is usually directed to one candidate. What the machine does is select whom they believe the most deserving candidate is, so the entire Greek community can rally behind her, vote for her, and ensure the HoCo Queen is a member of a sorority, creating positive press for the Greek community. They don't rotate the honor around (especially not just around Old Row-- in 2012 the Homecoming Queen was a DG), they just pick who they believe deserves it most. If you do your research you'll see that the girl they picked this year is so deserving and so involved, and she would make a great homecoming Queen.
