Maybe 50 years ago, I would have considered all of Virginia 'southern' but northern Virginia is definitely not southern. And Maryland, absolutely nothing southern about Maryland-exception, parts of eastern shore.

People -- don't be dumb. The original question in context is whether sorority girls at Baka consider Maryland and Virginia "southern" in terms of culture -- such that would a pnm from say Baltimore be considered "southern enough" in some settings. It was not a geography question.

It's been interesting to see the answers above, there is one obvious answer that hasn't been stated. People are Southern if their roots are Southern. Maryland and Virginia are both Southern states but they both have tons of immigrants from the North. Those people are not Southern, even if they've been here a couple of generations. People whose roots have been in Maryland since the 1700s are Southerners. If you don't know this, you shouldn't be answering this type of question.

I am from Maryland(30 min outside DC) and I am SO damn proud of it. To be honest, I do not consider it southern at all and you know what I do not care. I get that is below the Mason Dixon Line but nothing about it makes it southern. Also, I do not consider Virginia is southern at all unless you are talking about southen va. But seriously people do not insult Maryland.

The houses that care if you are "southern" are not good anymore because they deny members the benefit of geographic and cultural diversity and the cliques from high school just continue

Why would you only want local yokels from your own small town in your house? You go to a decent university like Alabama, and then hang out with the same people you see at the Piggly Wiggly every week.....

If you're gonna be a KA or similar house, why not just save money and go to your local community college? Since you're just gonna work for your daddy's company anyway. I dunno, it's your choice I guess, but why piss away the best opportunity you will ever have to meet a variety of people...

Answer #7 is the truth. You're southern if your people are southern and that's the important thing. If you start trying to pick apart geography, you have to take out Florida and the area around Atlanta. If your grandparents haven't always lived in the south it doesn't matter if you graduate from hs in Mobile or MB. You're not southern. So stop asking.

florida i can understand since most of its population are from the north now but 90% of atlanta's population is southern... 60% of the city are blacks who's roots go back to the slave days and the rest of the city is made up mostly of half of the whites who came down from the north and those who have been here for generations. if you were born and raised in the south i personally think that makes you southern, but that's just me i guess. All this Alabama lineage and old Alabama money being a factor is too much. so many things to divide people in this state, even within ones own race. its super tedious useless and annoying. idk why i even wasted my time with this. im going back to macon.

Shame on these kids that think southern is a criteria for admission to their club. So dumb. I would like a sorority or fraternity that was truly diverse and could help me grow as a person and educate me about different regional cultures.

Some kids from southern Ohio say "please" when the really mean "what did you say?" or "can you repeat that"? Interesting regional difference that I am glad to have learned....
