My freshman year last year, I rushed and received a bid to a house. I dropped, because it was horrible. The Greek System is extremely superficial and strips you of all your individuality and forces you to conform. They just want to get people that they can turn into frat boy robots and have no ability to think for themselves. They tell you who you can be friends with, who you can talk to, what you can wear, and encourage disturbing behavior. Save your money and sanity and stay independent.

It's easier to be independent at UT. I thought about it, but obviously all my friends would never allow for that.

If I had to be independent at a school like Bama, I'd probably transfer out ASAP.

I will say that a certain sorority (both here and across the country) is very tightly controlled by their nationals which views its members as part of their "brand" and I'm serious. My cousin is in this sorority at a different school and she's gone to both their convention and their leadership conference and has echoed this notion. It's like a cult and I'm never surprised when someone drops from this house.

If that was your experience, I feel sorry for you. Mine was wonderful. Nobody told me what to do, how to think what to wear, how to date. No one I know in other groups was forced to do anything either.
