i heard this but i hope i'm wrong

by: I'm mad

I heard that next year Panhellenic has decided that there are no more tumblrs and no more videos because of the poor taste and adverse publicity of the alpha phi video. This burns me up that everything has to change because those dumb clucks had to post a controversial video.

I also hear that but I didn't hear it was decided. I heard they were talking about it. Does anybody know for sure what's going on? It doesn't seem fair that one house can ruin it for everyone.

No final decision yet but yes, they are talking about it. After all of the controversy, a lot of us predicted that this would happen. It sucks, but UA doesn't want to be in the national news because of recruitment for the 4th year in a row (13,14,15 we've been national news bc of something or another). We all hate it but I don't blame the University for feeling that way.

It doesn't matter what Alabama does or doesn't do the national media will come down on us for something -- even if it's just for breathing!!!

So true.

That's because the media is biased and only publishes what it wants to publish, sadly.

At least we know the University isn't actively rooting out Greek Life. If this happened it would just be an effort on their part to keep the Greek Life and University out of the national news. I wouldn't like it but there are worse things in the world. New Girls and New Boys don't need a video to know what Greek Life is like down here anyway.

Anyone in the administration trying to do that would be quickly ridden out on a rail and their a$s handed to them. UA's biggest supporters and contributors are Greeks. And they know that.

But the videos were a fun way to introduce your house to the high school girls and in my opinion if some house has a tasteful video they should be allowed to go on and put it out. Maybe just prohibit the house that caused the controversy. I think the other houses don't have a problem with making a tasteful video. If the one house does, punish them, not the rest of us.

But that's not the problem. Alpha Phi's video had nothing wrong with it and it was not any different than any other sorority video. You can't punish aphi for something like that. The problem is not our sororities. The problem is not the videos. The problem is the media who will attack any possible thing they can for attention. If these videos are somehow shining a not so great light on the University, then they should be banned. Greek life at bama is the best in the country and Panhellenic does not want anything to ruin it. They're looking out for us

Yep. Let's spend the money on other things. Good things. Helpful things.

Greek like is great at bama, unique in my opinion. I'm curious to know one if they were more concerned with kind of attention it garnered. Wonder if it attracted some creepers. Thats my guess since they had to shut down their social sites, omit names of EC on their page, as well as not releasing PC names. Please don't come on here and attack me for this question. I'm not implying anything is wrong with video (have my opinions) but doesn't mean I thought it should have been taken down.

There prob were some creepers that were an issue. Go out on national news pages and a lot of the posts under this story are along the lines of "I'm a guy who wishes I had gone to Bama" or "look at the elitist, attractive girls - I can't afford this life, why should they be able to do this". The entire US thinks that Bama is all rich beautiful girls (and are they so wrong?) in super sized houses, so it's not BAD press, it's just unwanted attention. Nothing wrong with being a rock star, just doesn't completely fit with conservative attitudes.

I agree with a lot of what you said, and I'm not trying to bash APhi because I liked most of their video. But the reason the University is viewing it as "BAD press" is because the video showed predominately white, thin, blonde girls, and none of APhi's AA/minority sisters but it did feature an AA football player. Because of all of the allegations of blatant racism in our Panhel that drew national attention after Recruitment in both '13 and '14, this was a huge issue. The video failed to show how far we've actually come in terms of increasing diversity in our chapters and how much we love ALL of our sisters, including our minority sisters. That was the problem-UA was made to look like a hypocrite for touting the changes we've enthusiastically made when the video was composed only of white, thin, blonde women. That's why the University is so concerned about this.

I understand the concern the university has regarding issues of perceived racism. But, it is very unfair to judge Bama when Arizona State University Alpha Phi has a 2015 recruitment video that ...wait for it... only features thin white girls. Where is the outrage? Why is it always directed at Bama? And only directed at Bama. The hypocrisy is ridiculous.

Why don't they just come up with some guidelines for future videos?
