They got a crappy pledge class and have been made fun of on everything from social media to the Today show. I'm not sure how a hashtag is going to make this positive.

True. If you just go by looks they did their usual. If you go by gpa or activities, they did worse. I don't think that's what they thought would happen with the vid.

Agree. So much hate directed at one group of girls without any consideration at all for girls this person knows absolutely nothing about. I'd be watching my back, it is going to come around and bite you and it wil hurt.

This has become harassment and slander. Of course, read the fine print on the bottom of the page. That should give you all the information you need to know about this site. Any site that allows for anonymous postings is a cyber bully and allows for such an environment to exist. Just pitiful that someone has this much hate and pitiful that others entertain it.

Opinions do not equate to truth. Re read your post.

Are you responding to my post or 'harassment and slander?' above? if its post above mine, is it this statement 'My opinion about the video is a true fact, not a false spoken statement'...I too overlooked that. Maybe they could expand.

We'll leave it up to a court to decide. I'm game.

by: well

Do you have a cause of action? Are you paying for the attorneys and court costs? And by the way, who's suing whom? Are you inviting AP internationals to sue anonymous posters who disagreed with the advisability of posting the video? All I can say is OH MY!

all sorority videos are like that... i don't understand what the controversy is. Should Alpha Phi just apologize for being pretty and white.

by: Ummm

I think the "white" thing is one of people's biggest problems with the video bc they DO have AA women in their group, but chose to only feature the same blonde, thin, white girls over and over again. Yet, they had an AA football player in the video-but not their own AA sisters. The other issue is that they didn't feature things like sisterhood/bonding, philanthropy, campus activities etc. It kinda looked like a Hooters ad, tbh.

Their AA member did not want to be in the video. How do you know that she was excluded from participating? This house has about 350 members and maybe 70 were in the video.

How did this video go so viral to begin with? I mean all the houses have their videos on YouTube every year. Did they hashtag Kenyan Drake or something?

Defamation (which is the fancy legal word for both slander and libel) requires a false statement of FACT. A statement of opinion (whether or not it's sincerely held) can never give rise to an action for defamation. So you can state your opinion about the alpha phi video all you want, you can even lie about your opinion (although idk why anyone would do that, that makes absolutely no sense) and it still won't be defamation. The only thing worse than all of the anonymous cyber bullying and sorority bashing that goes on on here, is all of the ignorant comments made by people who have no idea what they're talking about. A word of advice (and this applies to both incorrect statements of law, as well as statements bashing a sorority): do your due diligence first and think before you open your mouth; otherwise you run the risk of sounding both unintelligent and catty.

Be careful that you don't sound pompous and catty. That's the only thing that's worse than sounding unintelligent and catty.

And just a suggestion... You should look up the term "due diligence" before you use it again. It means investigating to satisfy a legal requirement, especially prior to buying or selling something. Since there are no legal requirements in question there was no due diligence to do.

Perhaps you can apologize to the person to whom you were addressing your LAW 101 rant.

Finally, someone who actually knows what they're talking about when it comes to the law!! Thank you!!! Negative opinions do NOT equal defamation (slander and libel). Any respectable attorney would laugh in your face if you tried to say that these opinions are defamation. The people claiming otherwise are just as ignorant and rude as the people talking badly about Alpha Phi.

Yeah. that's what everyone has been saying. Opinions can be either true or false but they're not facts. The allegations of slander and libel were just silly attempts to deflect the criticism away from A Phi. I understand that the A Phis want to rally around their video and their house, but they'd do better to listen to the criticism quietly and maybe use the criticism to inform their decisions in the future.
