List of houses with the most girls dropping out

by: D

The houses who are not at total because they lose members are eligible to add members through cob (continuous open bidding). The list of those houses is on the pan site. It doesn’t mean these are bad houses, but it is a red flag that so many girls are dropping out of these houses.

It's not all about sorority red flags. People graduate in December, get internships and study abroad, leave school for many reasons - family issues, health issues, second thoughts about college, finances, etc. And there are also those who join a sorority with unrealistic expectations and for the wrong reasons. There are rules and requirements for membership, it's expensive, and you are going to have some of the same social issues that you would have anywhere and everywhere and are not going to like everyone in your house and not everyone is going to like you. High school girls get so caught up in the social media aspect of sorority life but don't really consider that they have to make an effort and hold up their end of behavior and money and grades. If you are immature and selfish you aren't going to get along well or succeed anywhere.

All of these are true reasons for people to leave, but they apply equally to every house. Yet some houses struggle with retention much more than others, and it is usually a pattern for those houses every semester. It comes from a combination of how they are recruiting (this is why chapters care about grades and reputation), sisterhood, how well run the chapter is (who is on exec, who are advisors, etc)

More Southern juniors and seniors stay in OR not necessarily because they are happy; they stay because of the social pressure among Southern girls and their moms, grandmas, and friends. If they drop, everyone in their social circle and hometown (where they will likely return after college) will freak out on them. They would basically lose all their friends in the house if they drop and would have to deal with crap at home too.

NR girls who are not from the South are don’t have the same mindset and don’t count on their sorority status meaning anything in the real world after college. It gives them more freedom to make choices that are right for them.

The recent survey revealing the level of happiness among AGD seniors is pretty indicative of how seniors in OR who stay feel. Many, many stay to avoid social isolation. None of the AGD sisters that were friends of the girl that got kicked out had her back because they couldn’t- they’d threaten their own good standing in the house if they did.

I know a PM that dropped and her house told other girls she wasn’t even allowed to visit them or be in the house (her friends in the house lived there) and they were encouraged to not associate with her anymore.

High retention does NOT mean happier junior and seniors. We aren’t buying what you’re selling.

No one stays in their house because of moms and grannies. No one would lose all their friends if they dropped. They don’t return to their hometowns to join jr league or any of the other stupid stereotypes from 1960. It’s 2023 now. Besides the majority of OR actives are OOS including the active who was kicked out of AGD.

The houses that can’t keep enough members and need to cob are on the list. Just a fact. Look it up.

All this OR bashing and crazy BS about religious coercion is either by trolls who don’t go to school here or trolls who are bitter they were cut. No one IRL who goes to school here obsesses about OR except trolls on GR who aren’t in one of those houses.

@um No is right. There are lots of OOR and OOS girls in old row. The very first girl I met at Kappa during rush was from Cali. I know of girls from the Northeast and midwest in Tri Delt, Alpha Gam and AXO. Every PNM will find this out during rush, you can ask the girls where they are from when you are talking to them during rush. These houses have over 400 members each. Just keep an open mind and find your best fit, there are girls from every region in every house.

Actually, a lot of seniors in OR stay because their moms want them to and are paying for it all anyway and their friends in the house would be mad at them if they dropped. Those are real things. Not sure if the ability to keep girls all 4 years is a direct sign of how happy girls are in their house. It may be a sign that you successfully created a culture where staying and being unhappy is less bad than dropping and being subjected to the wrath of your house.

All senior actives OR and NR have moms who are paying for sorority. “Those are real things” haha. They OR and NR are usually living off campus. Their senior friends are all living off campus too and over going to chapter and most things undergrad esp in spring. So no, seniors would not “be subjected to wrath” from their house or their southern mommies.

Where do you come up with this lame BS? Are you the creepy middle-aged nanny lady from TT who makes lists of PNMs to stalk? You obviously don’t go to school here.

Seniors drop out of their sororities all the time. They have seen and done everything already, and have their friend groups both female and male, and they don't live on campus. It gets old and they are graduating and mentally moving on. They're not really invested as much whether OR or NR.

This thread is so childish. You are talking about social organizations here. It is not life or death. Some members do feel pressure to stay for a variety of reasons just as others leave for a variety of reasons. Let it freaking go already. There is no right or no wrong. I would never choose a sorority based on gpa ranks or retention or COB numbers. Greek Life is about my happiness at Bama. It is friends, socializing, mixing, and making memories. I don't have time for all of this garbage. I would rather be happy and enjoy my time because it is going too fast.

Honestly, it’s pretty typical to “lose interest” in Greek life junior and senior years.

Other priorities - like study abroad and internships, social outlets and set friend groups, friends from classes and outside the house, make Greek life less central as you get to junior year.

And given Bama dues and expenses “not worth it”.

I guess if you want to be around “the girls
from your hometown” - that you joined the house with, continue to hang out with and will return home with - the above doesn’t apply.

But for many, it’s a natural progression.

Nice try granny you are still reaching to explain why some houses have good retention and others don't. It's not because actives in houses with good retention are returning to their hometowns like it's 1950.

The question isn't why top houses have good retention, it's why a lot of other houses don't. Answer that like it's 2023.

@ok
it does matter. you have to look at the number of active members and new members each semester on the grade reports.

using aphi in spring 2022 their total membership total was 342, but that was with adding 50 more cob members that spring and still not even close to total. then in fall 2022 they started with 238 active members and had to add 204 more members in fall with a huge nm class and cob. they still could not hit total and still doing cob in spring 2023.

so the mem total doesn’t mean anything when you are constantly needing to replace huge numbers that drop out. that’s a retention problem. why do so many drop?

by: You missed the point

I think the point is why does it matter to girls that aren’t in those houses. For the girls in those houses who really care about retention then they wouldn’t go on GR to ask, they would talk to their exec. You could spin this anyway. How many girls are in the houses not on this list and aren’t active with and hate their houses but that have their parents just keep paying the dues rather than drop because of the pressure from southern moms to be in a sorority?

In a couple years you will be out of the Bama bubble and you will wish all you had to worry about is other sorority retention rates. Go and enjoy yourself and “don’t sweat the small stuff”

Aphi is always recruiting more than 140+ NM during fall recruitment and doing COB. They always have the biggest spring NM classes and are still one of the smallest chapters. Have a look at ALL available grade reports.

I know a lot of Aphis who drop but still rep, follow, and are best friends with all the girls they met in Aphi. Like a lot of the responses here say, it’s not that deep to the OOS girls. These girls join to party, make friends, do the bama sorority thing for 2 years and then move on from paying outrageous dues and having those obligations that come with a sorority. They build strong frat ties and get invited to all those events the rest of their college yrs. Why do you care so much is the real question? Some sororities have different cultures and that’s okay. Worry about your own house.

I think a lot of OOR girls just aren’t prepared for the level of petty and judgment that is part of the Greek tradition at UA. They drop junior and senior year because what’s the point?

You Southern girls, though, you were raised to thrive in such an environment because nobody is more petty and judgmental than a Southern girl being told her house isn’t top🤣

the aphis don't have southern girls remember? they are all oos and oor. so why do they drop in such large numbers every semester?

What’s the point of this post? I don’t think freshman and sophomores care if a bunch of seniors drop. They don’t even know the seniors and if they do, the seniors are likely kinda mean and condescending to them. They care if they have friends in the house and have fun parties to attend. It’s just not that deep.
