Sorority recommendation for OOS, grade-focused?

by: pnm2027

Hey! I am from the Midwest and thinking about rushing next year. I like to be social but grades are important to me. I am also Christian and not big into partying. I don't care about getting a "top house," I just want whatever is the best fit. Any recommendations for sororities I should look into? Any I should stay away from? Thanks!

I was considering agd because it seems like a good fit but I am now concerned due to the recent scandal. What do you think?

I know a girl personally who is currently in axo but I have heard that axo doesn’t like OOS girls so I am worried.

I am also Christian and conservative and I’ve heard that the girls in xo are more liberal.

I do have a high gpa (almost a 4.0) and a high sat score (1500+).

Thanks for the reply!

You should focus on making connections and getting to know NR houses.

A good fit: PiPhi, Theta, Aopi, DG, SK

Not a good fit: Aphi, Zeta, Gphi, and to a lesser extent DZ

What do you mean by "NR" houses? And how do you suggest I go about making connections?

The houses listed above in the post are New Row houses and as an OOS PNM (especially if you are not from a Southern State) and do not have any connections with Actives in any of the OR (old row) houses, you will likely get released from the OR houses during recruitment. It's not personal. A lot of girls from AL, GA, and other Southern states have a lot of personal connections with Actives and they basically all want the same houses so those houses are competitive due to the Southern girls which are still a majority of girls on campus (AXO, KKG, KD, XO, PM, DDD).

AGD is for the really smart girls that do not want to party and they have been more open to OOS and OOR girls if the PNM's grades are super high (the OOS girls I know in that house all had high school GPA's above a 4.0). However, their sisterhood is a hot mess.

The NR houses listed above are likely the ones that will extend you a bid.

I recommend that you start following houses and Actives in the houses you are interested in on social media AND make your own social media accounts open to the public.

I understand the AGD fears. However, if I had to guess, I think the AGD senior who started the TT was probably someone on the more social, party side of the spectrum who didn't quite realize that AGD was going to be quite as straight laced as it is. So personality wise it may not have been a good fit. Personality wise, it seems like it might suit you more perhaps than it did her.

The sororities do the choosing. If you think that you are going to be able to pick and choose your best fit, you are in for a shock. You cannot focus on certain houses before recruitment and get your heart set because your favorites may not choose to invite you back, nor can you avoid any during recruitment because you go where you are asked back. Your ranks will actually not matter as much as you want them to. It's not a sign up sheet and it's not as mutual as you want it to be. But you will be fine if you don't take it personally and go where you are wanted.

This just needs to be pinned on the top of this site. Amazing how many people come here and just don’t understand this…

I understand, I was only asking because I am curious! At the end of the day, I want to go where I am wanted.

Don’t worry about it too much. Some of it you just don’t have any control over- if certain houses want girls with connections and you don’t have any…and you get dropped right away. It’s just not meant to be. Truth is- and it’s not just a cliche- there really isn’t a bad sorority at Alabama. Keep an open mind, try to go in without preconceived notions (especially the crap on this site) and just see how you mesh when you do meet the girls. Good luck.

Worry less about what houses would be a "good fit" for you and just keep doing what you're doing, follow all the houses on Instagram, get your rec letters if possible, and get/stay involved in your community!! Think about what you want out of your time in college and your future sorority and make the most of your conversations with actives during rush! It's a mutual selection process and you never know where you'll end up until bid day.
