Hey Phi Mu, Reel in Your Clout Chasers

by: AllAboutTheClout

Y'all got some desperate clout chasers in your recent pledge class.

Especially the girl that mass-follows hundreds of incoming freshmen (not just from Alabama, but Ole Miss, Auburn, Oklahoma, etc.) in a ploy to gain followers, then unfollows all of them the next day, including the ones that followed her back. Real Classy.

Future PNMs: While this is bad look for sorority girls, just know we're not all like this. And if this happens to you, shrug it off. It says more about the girl(s) doing it than it does about you.

Congrats on reaching over 4,000 followers, but we all see the real score:

Ha! My friend who's going to Ole Miss next fall told me she got followed by a Phi Mu from Bama. As soon as she followed her back, the girl unfollowed her. Bet it's the same person. \n\n\n\n\n

Let's not blame just one girl either. There are several hardcore clout chasers in that pledge class. Right now they are trying to get their follower counts up because we al know that is of core importance.

Let's also add some of the extremely long "linktree" lists that the clout chasers put in their bios. Puleeezzeee

To be fair, not all Phil Mus are like this. And honestly, there are girls in several houses that view pre-recruitment as an opportunity to blow up their social media following.

To them, every bio on an Alabama Class of 2027 Instagram page is a potential new follower, not a PNM for their house. They want new girls to follow them, but don't want to follow them back because they're obsessed with their ratio.

I've been perusing the '27 bios since January and following the girls I like (gasp, even those far OOR). I can't imagine following someone with the intention of dumping them as soon as they follow me back.

Maybe these amazing women should use their brains to build their social media platforms on a daily basis. If all they can do is look forward to prerecruitment and "follows" it doesn't say much for them. That's laziness.

Pick Me Girl Social Media Strategy: Trick people into following me!

It brands them, and their sorority, as shallow and self-absorbed. And frankly, it's embarrassing for Greek Life overall.

But do sororities care enough to stop it? That remains to be seen.

Hey y'all. I'm a hopeful PNM for fall rush at Alabama. Thank you for posting about this because this exact thing happened to me yesterday. I was worried I'd done or posted something wrong, so at least now I know it likely had nothing to do with me.

Wish I knew who you are talking about. Any hints?

I'm not on Instagram much, but I saw a couple Phi Mus followed me recently. One has a little above 4,000 followers. I don't want to follow her back if she's just gonna use me as a follower and ditch me.

Are many Phi Mus like this or are girls like the clout chaser mentioned the exception?

This is the laziest thread bashing another house I have ever seen. Do better.

Maybe I didn’t say this in my first reply, but I’m still a fan of Phi Mu. I’m sure many PNMs are.

But I do appreciate this post, because I think it is pretty crummy to take advantage of hopeful PNMs for the sole purpose of growing your Instagram clout. I get that people follow and unfollow people all the time, but it’s rude to follow hundreds of girls at a time knowing you’re going to dump them as soon as they follow you back. As a PNM, I feel trapped, like I can’t just unfollow her back or it could hurt me during rush.

It seems worth bringing the topic up because if I was on the exec board of a sorority where a girl or girls are doing this, I would want to know about. It’s better for everyone on both sides of recruitment to not treat PNMs like a tally mark.
