Advice for an incoming freshman. Not just rush
by: Help a girl outComing to a college as big as Alabama is scary. Honestly I would really love it if someone could give the advice they would give themselves coming in. Red flags in guys, how to recognize mean girl energy, going with your gut. I’ve struggled so much in high school with my judgment and I really would like whatever advice you all would have given yourself. Doesn’t have to be about rush at all but if you have any for that add that as well. I feel like there’s so many unspoken things that are necessary to know in order to get by as a freshman girl in a big school. Especially rushing

hey girl! so my biggest piece of advice is that you don’t need to go out all the time!!! i was never much of a party girl in hs and expected that to flip on a dime in college but it very much didn’t and there’s NOTHING wrong with that! and with that remember that you don’t have to do ANYTHING you’re uncomfortable with (like drinking, smoking weed, vaping, whatever.) BUT if you do wanna go out, GET A FAKE. it opens up your world so much especially because you’re still a minor at 18 here. you can’t do any “adult” things til you’re 19. i hope you love it here!!!

Looking back, I would say don't let your nerves get the best of you. There will be so many girls just like you that are nervous and anxious, so realize you are not the only one. Please try and enjoy the experience of moving in, making friends on your floor, and going through recruitment. Realize you can't control everything and it is all a process that will unfold over the few weeks on campus. You will slowly love your dorm room, you will make friends, and if you complete the recruitment week you will find your home away from home. I think you need to be cautious in some things you do because of the struggles that you mentioned, but trust yourself a bit more because this is the time for you to grow. It's okay to be cautious and double-check yourself from time to time. Most importantly, be yourself and I agree with the poster above. Don't do anything that you are uncomfortable with.
