Question on legacies

by: Question

I know legacies don’t matter anymore, but if I had an older sister who was a phi mu but dropped, I wouldn’t be considered a legacy right? Is it only if they graduate through?

You are a legacy if she was initiated.

But her sister dropped. She didn’t go early alum. If you drop out you’re relinquishing your membership. So not a legacy.

Not true. If she was initiated and deactivated from her chapter in good standing then she became an alum. There is a different thing where a member can turn in her pin and ask to be completely removed, but it'rare. Dropping from a chapter before graduation is not the same thing as relinquishing membership in the sisterhood.

No this is different for every sorority but for phi mu if you drop after initiation but didn’t drop out of school then they don’t offer early alum. Regardless phi mu doesn’t give preference to legacies

It all depends on what your sister’s status with Phi Mu is.

If she dropped before initiation, you’re not a Legacy.

If she dropped after initiation, it depends on if PM considers her an alumna member or not. Some sorority’s national orgs do not allow collegiate members who drop to “early alumna”; they force you to turn in your pin and disaffiliate. My org does not allow early alumna status, when you drop, you sever your connection forever. I don’t know what the PM policy is.

She was initiated! She dropped at the end of her sophomore year

It still depends on what PM considers her. Was she allowed to take early alumna status? Or did she have to turn in her pin & resign?

Phi Mu no longer recognizes legacies, so there’s no more advantages to being a legacy for Phi Mu national y

Well, again it’s more complicated than that. Because yeah a lot of us dropped our official legacy policies that say “hey the legacies gotta make it to round 2 no matter what.” Or “if they make it to pref they gotta go to the top of the bid list.”
BUT, alums can still register their legacies and let us know they’re coming through and at that point it’s up to the chapter if they care about that enough. My chapter had decided we were gonna be boosting legacies cuz we love that ish 💕
