Importance of being genuinely positive

by: Panda

To be very clear- toxic positivity is not what I am talking about here. There is no reason to say things that aren’t true. But there is a big case to be made for learning to not speak negatively about any of the Panhellenic chapters, if you wish to join one. You really need to begin practicing that now, before it’s too late.

One thing many don’t understand or realize going into sorority recruitment is that talking about other sororities is almost always a bad idea.

No matter how much you mention you are open minded, the moment you talk about the sorority chapter all your friends are in or the chapter you are legacy of, your chances of being invited back are diminished.

Trust me. I was dropped by every single sorority except the sorority I was a legacy of by the second day.

So as a PNM, avoid mentioning any other sororities even if a sister asks you how recruitment is going or how you feel about the other sororities on campus.

That means: don’t mention another sorority chapter by name or even infer you’re talking about another sorority on campus.

And even more importantly, don’t talk poorly about any sorority chapter (or fraternity) on campus even if you didn’t like them or they treated you poorly.

Until you learn this, you really have little to no chance of having a good recruitment experience. Positive talk equals a positive image. Negative talk just makes you look less desirable in every way.

To piggyback off of Panda, prior to rush, think about how you would answer questions that might work against you. For instance, if asked “what sororities have you visited today?” Be vague. You might answer, “I’ve already attended some parties, but I am so glad to be here! Tell me about ________.” Try to redirect the convo to the sorority you are currently with, and avoid sharing ANY info about your party list, what is going on at the other parties, or who you like. They shouldn’t be asking you, but you might find yourself in that awkward situation, so be prepared.

Truth is there is no point in pnms focusing on only certain chapters before rush begins. You will find out what chapters are interested in you at philanthropy round. It’s best right now to get to know all you can about all of the chapters, so that when you find out which ones you get invited to on philanthropy- you have an idea of who you will be talking to.
I hate to say it but every pnm thinks they’re the best of the best, and that’s great to have that confidence- but every year all of these girls get evenly distributed between the 17 chapters. Think about that. Rush is designed to evenly distribute pnms to all the chapters so that they all continue to thrive and Alabama stays strong.
All the chapters have women that were once pnms focused on just a few houses- but in the end, they found their homes in all of them.
Keep an open mind!

Please realize the majority of negativity on here is posted by those who are not involved in Greek Life at this school. This is good advice to take to heart.
