PNM's welcome to Bama

by: Justme

Bama Greek life is a hot mess. Its not what you think it will be. I came so excited, rushed, got into my #1 choice and have already dropped. Not saying you won't love Greek life, but there are plenty of things here to do without it. PNM's try not to stress too much. Trust the process and that may mean its not for you!

It’s incredibly hard to get dropped once you get in a house. That means you were a major standards violation or you did something they REALLY didn’t like

She means she dropped out of her sorority, not that they dropped her. Sheesh.

Entirely possible this story is a complete fabrication from someone who does not go here.

Greek life is not a hot mess. It is what you make it. Notice that the OP said she got her top house, but already dropped. Take this to mean that ranks or tiers mean absolutely nothing!! You can get a "top" house and be very unhappy, or get a "bottom" house and have the time of your life. If you're rushing for status or clout so you can brag over what letters you're wearing...then you're rushing for the wrong reasons. Seriously, no one cares what sorority you end up in. They really don't. Do it for yourself.

Every time someone says this it reminds me of cheer. Like. I was miserable but as long as your dad has bragging rights about it…

I agree. Join a house because you want to make good friends and have some fun. Choose a house based on where you feel most comfortable. It’s not high school anymore, nobody on campus cares about the ranks and if you think you have clout because you wear certain letters, people inside and outside of the Greek system will make fun of you. Once you join a house and make your friends, you will think it’s the best regardless of what anyone else says.

Not everyone feels comfortable in the house they receive a bid from for various reasons. 2,500 girls go through recruitment during one week so it’s not always going to end up being a good fit. Some girls don’t give the house a chance because it wasn’t the one they wanted so they have self inflicted misery. We hate those pledges. Other girls realize they are treated as outsiders in their house because they are so different than the majority of their house. They can’t change that and drop before they are initiated.

I think it is great she posted and I give her the benefit of the doubt on this one. Not everything is rosy for all pnms no matter where they land. Rush week is fast and you really don't have a lengthy amount of time to make your decision. The system works for countless girls, but there are many that it doesn't work for. Another factor that is important is you are paying for it. Whether your parents pay or you do it is close to $10K a year; and you are making this decision in one quick week. If you were joining a social country club you would not have to speed through countless clubs and make a fast decision. There are just so many factors that come into play when someone drops. I really hate to judge anyone and say they did not give it a fair try.
