I go to a bigger campus than Alabama and no sorority (we have 11) on my campus has more than 250 members! My pledge class was 48 girls. It’s hard to imagine what the culture is in such big houses. I don’t know if bigger is better when it comes to sisterhood.

There’s no way you know and are close with 400+ girls in your chapter. I can’t imagine it either. And I’m sure everyone secretly hates each other

Do all houses have the same quota?

No, they don't.

Yes. Quota is the same for all houses.

by: Quota

Quota is the same for all houses, but it ends up that less stronger recruiting houses take more due to something called Quota Plus. Quota Plus was put into place to ensure that every pnm gets a bid after pref if they don't SIP, even if it puts houses over Quota. So the short explanation of RFM is that stronger recruiting houses must cut more heavily from round to round and other houses may invite back more, so some end up with far more pnm's attending their pref and then take Quota and more new members through Quota Plus. It works out well with around 93% of pnm's getting a bid, with most of that unmatched 7% choosing to drop on their own. Also, there is a set Chapter Total that is adjusted every semester, and houses under that number are allowed to offer as many bids as they wish after recruitment to get up to that Total number. The system is designed to maintain equity among the chapters and to give pnm's their best chance for a bid to be in a sorority.

I think the numbers show who is still struggling to maintain membership and I hope Pan is doing everything they can to help those chapters get more girls to go through recruitment.

Aphi had 370 members in spring 21 and started with 260 active members in fall 21… so yeah they are def not struggling 🍅🍅🍅

Is it normal to lose 110 people from spring to fall?

By: ^

by: Facts

Aphi will say a lot of girls graduated and some transferred etc but they will never admit that they have been struggling with girls dropping out for years. And yes most of the 110 girls did drop. And no it is not normal that a flourishing chapter (that is what APhi wants you to believe) is loosing ~ 25% of their members within month. No other chapter not even SK has to manage these problems.

A few points for the uninitiated……

Yes these chapters are very large. And the cost for each girl are high also. Most of my friends at other schools can’t believe the dues and expenses, but that what supports the large and beautiful house structures and notable social calendar (as well as some nationals). The house budgets are high and the exec councils should be given notable credit for the size of the organization they manage and oversee.

The average pledge class tends to run about 135. It varies slightly from house to house. That gives a general idea of “drops”. With every house keeping every member for four years they’d be even larger at just over 500 members. There are some inactive members - typically on study abroad. Houses generally do NOT allow a drop and return policy without an extraordinary circumstance.

I believe OOR focused houses lose more girls as some eventually don’t see the cost benefit. If you join a house with your old high school/neighborhood/church friends and will return home after school and continue to hang out together, there are increased benefits to staying (and paying). You see some of this in the numbers.

With 400 girls and the recruitment of even more - as someone mentioned more than the typical high school - generalizations are mostly exaggerated about the “type” of girl in any given house. People are kidding themself if they think any house is all trust fund babies or any other stereotype. These reputations are developed from some visible (but small percentage in total) group within the house that tends to hold year over year and some element of truth amongst many members. But personalities within any house vary widely.

Most (honestly all) girls find a smaller core group of close knit friends within the bigger context of the house. That’s how most perceive their house - from the perspective of their close group. Generally, there will be girls you don't know by name in your pledge class, let alone house. Some you love and some, let’s just say maybe not.

A relatively small number of girls live in the house (60 to 70) in all houses.

However, all members (including those that live in the dorms (freshmen) and apartments (upperclassmen not in the house) MUST have a meal plan with the house and many girls convene for meals. You meet and join up with your core group and a handful of others.

Finally, when you add this all up, the size and complexity of these groups and organizations, from recruitment and bid day, charitable work, homecoming and social events - the overall experience is incredible and second to none.

In todays world, things like the overall grades of the sororities exceeding school averages, the charitable contributions made, the leadership experiences offered, and the connections and close friendships formed - all the benefits of Greek life can get lost which is a shame. Panlove

I feel like if we were to lose a chapter it would be SDT. I know they don't always participate in formal recruitment but their recruitments don't look like they are going well. With a couple more pledge classes I don't even think they will have enough members to fill all of the positions in their chapter. I really feel for them.

They only had 26 members last semester according to the grade report. I had no idea their numbers were down that much. 😬

by: Joking, right?

KD’s numbers prove that they didn’t snap or COB. It would have been impossible. At most it proves they had more quota plus members than others ( and good for them. It means they put on a good recruitment!). Their numbers are 20-30 more than the next top houses. And PBP, we see you! We ALL know who is the irrefutable top of new row!

You are a funny lady KD Mom. Bigger does not mean better. It is quality that counts. KD did COB. You do not judge a house weather they have 429 members vs 417. Give me a break.

by: quota plus = not strong

Oh my, no, KD mom. Quota Plus means the opposite of putting on a good recruitment. Houses that don't have strong return rates (because they don't recruit as well) must ask back more pnm's from round to round, and then they end up with large pref numbers that result in Quota Plus. Which is worse, offering a bunch of COB's to get up to house total, or underperforming in rush and having to take a high Quota Plus? (Hint: underperforming in rush is worse.) Inform yourself and understand that you just need to stop embarrassing your sorority and keep quiet.

KD would not have been allowed to do COB— that’s reserved for chapters under total. Based on their PC number it’s likely they took four or five QA’s which is pretty low. Maybe they just have decent retention. Southern chapters usually do.

The difference in numbers is NR v. OR. As someone already commented, by junior and senior year, OOR girls see less value in staying with their sorority and drop during those years (after their years of going to theme parties and formals and living in the house). It’s why the NR houses have smaller numbers. OR tends to keep its Southern members for the full 4 years because those girls all came from the same neighborhoods and cities and will likely return to them with their OR husbands. They definitely view it as a lifelong membership.

Really nice to see Pi Phi in top 8 for members and grades, and DG top 5 in grades and top 8 in members. Those are big accomplishments and they’re the only NR houses to achieve it, I believe.

SK has 261 not 216 and they've grown by 22% since 2018. You don't double in size in just a few years. If they picked up 200 girls through COB everyone would criticize them for being desperate.

And remember APhi had to COB and do spring rush every single year since they started. And they still are keeping their total up with that strategy. Have a look at the grade reports and new member numbers.
