They make the big cuts in the beginning by GPA - if you go to the Panhellenic website, you will see the average GPA for each sorority. The ranking is more toward the end...

are you asking if sororities rank every single PNM on a list when deciding who goes onto the next round? OR are you asking if sororities rank their own members?

every chapter does things their own way but yes, every single PNM is ranked on lists, typically divided between freshmen quota and upperclassmen quota. it’s not like you talk to 1 girl and she decides if ur coming back or not. she has to score you, and when we score we are not sure what score is the cut off for being called back to the next round. then, some chapters have the whole chapter deciding or just the rush team/exec but they go over the list and make sure scores are right. then, members who didn’t speak to the PNM but know her are allowed to speak up and either advocate for a girl or get her dropped.

Don't worry, it is not about ridiculing or shaming, if that's what you're worried about. The members are trying to find the good, not waste their time on being negative about a few thousand girls. There are several factors that matter, with grades being the first thing that is looked at, then the way you present yourself in person, then your personal connections to members, and finally your resume, but honestly most everyone has a great resume so that mostly helps the houses to pair you with actives that have something in common so your conversations will go well. The pool of pnm's is a bell curve: a small percentage are super duper desirable and a small percentage are obviously a bad fit, but most everyone else is smack in the middle of that bell somewhere. Different houses put emphasis on different things, so the bell curve for each house is going to be different, therefore their assessments about pnm's will be different too. Rankings are all business, not catty, not personal. You may be cut from a house but that doesn't mean they think you're an unworthy soul and wouldn't say hey to you in class.

exactly!! Tbh we’re more focused on speed and getting through the list than being mean lol. the only things i’ve heard members speak up against a pnm is if 1) she’s catty and cares about ranks, talks down other houses, and thinks she’s too good for other houses, 2) she was a known mean girl/bully in hs, or 3) she’s a strooong legacy at another house, only talked about 1 house, has active family members in another house (when this is the case we debate if its worth fighting for the PNM or if she’s just gung ho for this other house)

houses that are more ~selective~ also have to cut more people so it’s really a numbers game and usually not personal. some houses also have to take more legacies one year than the other depending on how many are rushing.

from someone who’s rushed PNMs for 2 formal recruitments, i really always think i’m gonna remember every girl and deciding her score is going to be easy but it never is lol. i always end up forgetting some names (thank god for my notes haha). i vibe with almost all of the pnms i talk to because of our matching so it’s hard to decide who has to get cut.
ultimately, despite being a member and representative of my sorority, i’m not the only girl in my sorority. i have to consider
— would this pnm have a friend group here? do i have a big for her in mind? are we what she’s looking for in a sorority experience and will she add value to our membership? what can i gauge about her character/values and would i want her as a future sister? can i see her fitting better and thriving in a different house?
