question about roommates

these are probably stupid questions but when should I find my roommate? I've heard people say to start looking in the early spring, and others say that I should have mine by now. I'm from far OOS so I don't have any friends going to Bama. Also, am I supposed to sign up for housing before or after getting a roommate?

You pay the housing deposit before getting a roommate. You can go on the bama housing portal starting in November or so to do a roommate search
