Leave him alone. He's a middle schooler trying to attract attention.

One troll does. If you were on campus you’d know that nobody judges them for that. It could literally have been any house and we all know it.

Yes, it theoretically could’ve been any house on campus... but it wasn’t.

Kinda unrelated but does anyone know why alpha phi is pronounced fee instead of phi?

By: A phi?
by: Google is your friend

Because it's the proper greek pronunciation.

No, it’s not the correct Greek pronunciation. APhi pronounces “Phi” like “fee” because they didn’t know how to pronounce it at the time and didn’t bother changing once they found out.

Every other house with “Phi” in it pronounces it properly, take for example: Pi Beta Phi, Gamma Phi Betta, Phi Mu, Phi Gamma Delta, Pi Kappa Phi, Phi Delta Theta, etc.

In actual Greek it’s always “phee”.

no, APhi literally didn’t know how to pronounce the Greek alphabet when they were founded. they mispronounced Phi as “fee” and it stuck.

Wrong. How ignorant can you be when the actual answer is just a Google away. It's the correct Greek pronunciation of Phi.

I'm a math major and it's about 70/30% on how my math and physics professors pronounce phi. Most use FEE as that is the proper greek pronunciation, and some use FYE (like eye) because it's the more common pronunciation in English. A quick google search suggests that Aphi went with FEE because it is more classical Greek and it sounds more feminine like FEEmale.

I don't get the point of making up a story about Aphi screwing up the pronunciation since it's so easily disproved, and most of us actually learned this in our houses when we learned Greek letters. Both FEE and FYE are correct pronunciations.

In Greek it's pronounced "phee" when it comes after a vowel. As you can see, the "phee" stands alone after a space so the Alpha Phi's were mistaken. But they had good intentions. It it had been part of a word, they would have been right. No other house made the same mistake.

What are you talking about ^ It comes after Alpha which represents A and a vowel. You're trying way too hard to make this a thing. Did you learn nothing in your house or are you just not in one? The Greek and anglicized pronunciations were both in my sorority's handbook. Both are acceptable and they chose to be different. That's all.

Once again, just google it since you've apparently never been through new member training.

From The Golden Number (Google The Golden Number and Alpha Phi if you want to find it)

"My Greek phriend Tassos Spiliotopoulos offers the following: The letters of the Greek alphabet are written as words and not as single letters, for example the first letter A is written AΛΦA and sounds like Alpha. When it comes to letters like Π, Χ, Φ (written ΠI, ΧI and ΦI respectively), the misunderstanding comes from the pronunciation of the letter ‘I’ which in English rhymes with fly but in Greek is pronounced EE. The letter Φ is always pronounced PHEE in Greek, and it does not differ if followed by a vowel or a consonant."

I guess Aphi derangement syndrome really is a thing. I’m not an Aphi as much as you’d like to say I am, but I am in a house and learned the basics of greek letters. Sorry you are not. You’re arguing a made up story that you are peddling to which there is no proof or evidence and I’m providing facts. You sound and look like an idiot so I don’t get the point. There is an entire thread of things to bash Aphi over but this is where you chose to look like an idiot, although I have no doubt you’re all over the other comments too.

No offense, but I believe my math and science professors over an obsessed troll on the internet with no proof and an obvious weird obsession for a house they have nothing to do with. Especially when a simple google search answers the question multiple times over.

This is an interesting conversation but as because math said a few times, it’s 100% accurate the way APHI says it. We all know it and to try and argue differently is absurd.

What do you hope to accomplish other than proving you’ve never been in a greek org? If that’s your goal, congrats! You succeeded! Fee is proper. Get over it yourself.

You’re an angry little troll @&. You should get help for that. I’d suggest you check out campus services but you and I both know you’ve never stepped foot on ua’s campus.
