I’m from New York and we don’t say sir and Ma’am
by: SavWhen I come I don’t want to be disrespectful. I heard it’s what you do to show respect for our elders in the south. Like do you guys say it to every elder? I’ve also heard replying with “what” or “huh” is disrespectful as well. Is that true?

Southern culture: Play it by ear. The professors will be used to it due to the demographics of the students, but some professors will be very against the usage.
Using it to respect wait staff and minimum wage employees is in good taste.
Northern culture:
"Ma'am" is sometimes considered very disrespectful in northern society, even in proper interviews. It can be viewed as antiquated or a sign of a "small world view."
"Sir" is typically respectful, but not to everyone.
Everything in context.

I’m an active from New England... you don’t have to use sir/ma’am when you’re down here. Honestly, you might pick it up, along with the word y’all, after being on campus for a while. But ultimately, if you’re just a nice/polite person it doesn’t make a difference whether you say it or not
#3by: Huh?

There are so many parts of New York and so many people don’t say sir and Ma’am and are still respectful and have good manners. So many people find it disrespectful to use the word ma’am and sir. So your statement was dumb because you don’t speak for ALL of New York.
