Fraternities As Strong As Sororities?

by: Question

All I hear about here is the sorority houses. Can I ask how strong the fraternities are here, relative to their female counterparts?

Asking because I’m looking at schools and at some it is very strong on the female end but the fraternities are all kind of falling apart.

It’s just because there are more girls in sororities than guys in frats here. I think it’s like 7000 to 4000. The frats recruitment is also really weak and informal

One of the schools I’m looking at is Missouri and the girls there openly talk about how they wouldn’t even consider dating anyone at the fraternities. They have a list of all the fraternities that have been kicked off campus in the past few years, alone. It just made me wonder if that’s what’s happening everywhere. It seems like Alabama has a stronger Greek system in general, but it’s hard to get a feel for anything when you can’t visit the campus. We are hoping to visit soon but I was hoping to get an honest perspective of how much interaction usually happens here. Obviously right now, there’s not much happening- but maybe last year or last fall or the year before that. Hopefully things will get back to normal at some point???

Are you a guy wanting to join a frat or a girl just curious? A lot of frats already pick out their pledge class before classes even start - like even during your last high school semester/during the summer. Each frat does it differently too, unlike the sororities that have formal recruitment. A lot of frats get kicked because their rules are nowhere near as strict as sororities. In terms of schools (obviously this is my experience/things I've heard so its subjective), Auburn and UGA have the best frat guys.

I’m a girl and will be a freshman next year. Alabama is my top choice school and while it won’t affect my decision, I was curious how fraternities here are thriving and whether or not the sororities actually get to interact a lot with them and it it is a positive thing. I’m seeing only negative at the other schools that are on my list. I’m not sure UGA is even on my radar. I’d rather be at Alabama than Auburn and wouldn’t change that just because of concerns with Greek Life. I mean, I might not even get into a house but it still is something I’m curious about understanding. My dad was in a fraternity and it seems like everything has changed in the last 10 years or so. Most of the houses that were on campus at his college, when he was there, are now gone.

To answer your question in the comments, they are thriving in the social sense. Almost every week sororities will have swaps with a different fraternity (for freshmen/new members). All of the sorority girls go to date parties with guys in all different fraternities. Greek people hang out with other Greek people. Most of the girls hate to love frat boys

The short answer is to OP's question is yes fraternities are just as strong or stronger than sororities. You hear a lot about old row sororities, but really there is no old row sororities, there are old row fraternities and certain sororities that get invited to an old row fraternity party.

You will also hear things about the Machine, which is controlled by fraternities.

Both Fraternities and sororities are strong here.
