Sad to see right next to their pic from last year with so many more girls. Hoping they can turn things around with COB

I truly think doing recruitment this way this year was not the best move for them considering the different expectations for PNMs who go through formal rush. If they could make it more of a “recolonization” effort like SK, they’d have a better chance.
However I think they were trying to get recruitment in now since there’s no telling how long we will be on campus for...

Absolutely. This wasn’t their usual “target” PNM crowd.

Think about like this five is more than 0. Heritage is everything at Bama they could never make it with that type of climate. Look at Theta, SK, and DG, they're just huge cling on chapters for Panhellenic swell but at least they have big nationals and can float around the country/globe.

Me too. I just love greek life so much so my heart hurts for the women. It probably stings knowing that only 5 women wanted you and it's not a feeling I would want anyone to have. I really hope that they can stay on campus long enough this year to COB and bring their numbers back up. Part of me wants them to be uplifted, but the other part just wants to put them out of their misery and just pull the plug.

this makes me sad because you know they preffed WAY more girls than this :( they seem like a nice, genuine house? do people think they're "too good" for SDT?

By: ?
by: Pnm

I think most girls just wanted a different experience than what sdt has to offer

For real, idk if they were going to be assimilating into panhel more or what but if that’s their plan they didn’t make it clear. And that’s what would have been make or break for them and their PNMs.

i mean i can’t speak for how well they recruited this semester. but the experience is genuinely the same as every other chapter just our house is by the frats and it’s a bit of a smaller scale. they participate in all they same activities that all the other chapters do, and have swaps, date parties, and everything else.

I’m sorry their experience is not the same. I appreciate people trying to lift them up but you can not compare apples to oranges. If it were the same experience like in theta of SK, It’d be another story.

But I do honestly think it is the same experience. They do greek week, hoco, swaps, formals, retreats, big/lil, swaps, everything just on a smaller scale.

SDT offers pretty much the same experience as all the other houses. Yes they are smaller but in all the respects that matter, it is the same

Someone saying they wanted a “different experience” makes me think that they are trying to be polite about saying they thought they were better than SDT

by: Well

Technically, SDT offers a comparable experience to other APA sororities in the sense that they have swaps, date parties, etc. But the reality is that they're on the fringes of the Greek scene. Their social calendar is mainly limited to off-campus fraternities and they do a lot of stuff with the United Greek Council (special interest) orgs.

How did no one catch the SDT on here? “Our house is by the frats”, come on rookies. She explicitly dropped “our”.

Tbh I was pretty shocked when they decided to do Panhellenic recruitment at the last minute, considering SK is so new. Everyone knows 2 sororities should not colonize at the same time because one will always be the more "desirable" one and hurt the other. That's honestly kinda the situation with SK/SDT I feel like. Maybe Panhel should have had them wait a few years and reestablish themselves before jumping in to formal recruitment.

By: Sdt
by: Imo

Before having SK come into campus, Panhellenic should've tried to build up SDT and make them capable of recruiting. I feel terrible for them but I'm happy that they got at least 5 new members!

Because they’re a single letter chapter who have been at ua for 85 years

Idk if this is a stupid question but what does single letter chapter mean??

By: Idk
Report
by: it means

It means they are one of the first chapters after their founding chapter, that is what single letter means.

By: it means
Report
by: @idk

For most sororities, the founding chapter (1st chapter ever) is designated the Alpha chapter (ChiO is a notable exception, with the founders choosing Psi as their founding chapter)

Then the next chapters are designated by different Greek letters, usually in order (ex. 2nd chapter is Beta chapter, 3rd chapter is Gamma chapter, 4th chapter is Delta chapter, etc.).

Some sororities do not do it this way though... I think some sororities allow chapters to choose their own letters instead of going in order. And Chi O went backwards in the Greek alphabet from Psi. Pi Phi has the state and then the letter designation (ex. AL-Alpha, AL-Beta, GA-Alpha, GA-Beta, etc.).

Anyway Bama's SDT chapter is their Rho chapter, established in 1935. Considering that SDT founding chapter was established in 1917, their Rho chapter is one of their earliest chapters. And the fact that it has been operating continuously (without being closed) is notable too. Their nationals clearly wants to keep it going because it is an important chapter to them.

i have a friend who is in sdt and from what ive heard their nationals does not want them to get bigger despite the members wanting to. they’re all really disappointed about this and wanted a much bigger pledge class, but apparently their nationals set a quota of 20 girls for this pc, and my friend thinks this messed with the computer algorithm, because she said they preffed 200
pnms. i feel really bad for them

By: -
by: Idk

If that’s true, they should never participate in rush since they won’t be able to provide the typical Bama experience with a 20 girl PC

By: Idk

by: Yeah

Even if they preffed 200 girls, if all 200 put the other house they wanted first and those houses never filled, no one would get sdt

Who cares? SDT isn’t the only chapter where Bama is a single letter.

Delta phi epsilon was also founded in 1935, single letter and they haven’t been approved. I am sure other Greek orgs not on campus also have single letter chapters here too

By: Idk
by: @idk

That isn’t what they means. SDT and DPhiE were both founded in 1917 (not 1935) and the SDT chapter at UA was founded in 1935 (Rho meaning they were the 17th chapter of SDT to ever open. Any other sorority chapter who opened at UA would not be a single letter, because those chapters have existed for a long time. Hope this helps.

If Dphie reopened, their chapter would be the Pi chapter, a single letter chapter.

Unlike alpha xi, which was not a single letter chapter when here

by: Yeah

Yeah what Uh No said, dphie had a chapter here. I guess the difference is dphie closed and sdt hasn’t. Much harder too convince the university for a do-over

by: @Idk

The difference is that DPhiE at Bama closed while SDT has found ways to keep the Bama chapter going. They have never closed on this campus.

If their nationals doesn't want to pull the plug, then they don't want to pull the plug. It's ridiculous that you think your opinion regarding this is so influential and that it matters

Also like it takes a HUGE amount of money, time and resources to colonize, especially at a big SEC school like Bama. DPhiE recolonized their Psi chapter at UGA a few years ago and are obviously focusing on that and their other new chapters - Bama probably isn't on their radar for the next little while. Whereas with SDT, it's so much easier to keep a chapter afloat and open even if they're a bit lost. Yes, SDT could 'reorganize' which may be more cost and resource-effective, but there's such a big stigma against SDT on-campus that I really doubt it would make a difference. And I say this as someone who really would love to see SDT flourish and not be treated so poorly by PNMs (and actives in other chapters, let's be real here). It's really just a crappy situation for these wonderful girls who have such big hearts. I wish them well.

They actually presented to Panhellenic in 2013 but weren't invited to recolonize.

I don't mean to be rude because SDT are lovely girls but y'all are delusional if you think SDT offers the same experience as the other houses.

They're small and they have a strong sisterhood but I dropped them because I want to be part of a large PC, mansion on the row, etc. I don't care about tiers but I want the typical Bama sorority experience.

No offense but I don't think they should participate in rush until they offer the usual experience. I know it's a chicken and egg thing but I would've been upset if I was choosing between any of the houses and SDT this year.

yeah my guess is they normally don’t have the money to compete with other houses during formal recruitment, but this year it was obviously cheaper so there was no reason not to try. it doesn’t seem like it worked out for them and i’d be surprised if they do it again ... i don’t think it was some grand master plan to be like the other houses.
