Does being from the north really matter

by: Needtoknow

OK so what’s the actual Tea?? So many people say that being from the north shouldn’t affect your chances at rush but if in reality does it actually? Are there biases put on from people because they’re from the north during rush and why?

Yes, it does. Not being from Alabama there will be bias against you during recruitment because "Old Row" sororities prefer PNMs from AL, many of whom have connections. These sororities are the ones that are ranked as "top" on this site by their members and crazy alumnae who stalk this website.

If you're out of state (but still in the southern region), that is going to affect your rush. If you're out of state and out of region, that is also going to affect your rush.

It just is what it is. Nothing you can do about it other than get off this site, ignore the rankings, and be open to every single house on this campus. Trust me, every house on this campus is amazing.

So do girls that are out of state but still from the south have a better chance of getting those houses over girls who are out of state and out of region?

I would say that girls who are from the South are more likely to have connections to the houses. And the more connections you have, the better your chances.

This is not true at all for my old row house...... I’m in a notoriously southern “exclusive” house from far oos and we rush every single girl the same, doesn’t matter where they’re from.... obviously the southern/in state girls have an advantage but that’s only because they already know girls in the house, and their friends are the ones exec, running the show. People on this site act like OR houses discriminate against oos and will choose a girl over another girl just cause she’s from alabama and that’s straight up not true. If you don’t have connections and friends who actually want you in their house it doesn’t matter where you are from at all, whether it’s wyoming or Atlanta. You will get treated the same, at least in my house

And if for some weird reason your OR sorority actually takes girls from the south solely for that reason then ya’ll are weird af and that sucks.

There are plenty of girls in every house from OOS and OOR, only the Mountain Brook mom's will try to convince you otherwise.

Right, that's why some houses have such a large proportion of OOS/OOR girls and other houses have such a large proportion of AL girls?

Sure there are some OOS/OOR girls in every house, but a OOS/OOR student has more realistic chances in houses that are more open to OOS/OOR girls and those houses tend to have a higher proportion of OOS/OOR girls

In state girls know more people and that’s a big reason they do better. If you have friends in the house obviously they will want you to pledge.

Of course it matters. There are less girls from the North that come down here, so you will have little to no connections in each house, where in-state girls will know a girl everywhere they go. That being said, it will NOT hinder your chances with getting the house you want. In the end, that is up to how well you present yourself and click with the girls. I am from the Northeast and I preffed two old row houses the year I rushed. Am I one of very few girls from my region in my house? Yes. Am I looked down on by other girls because of it? Probably. But you ultimately control your rush experience, not your home town.
