spring rush

by: jennie

so I'm a freshman here at bama and from when I first got admitted to bama last year I knew I was gonna rush. I've always wanted to be in a sorority and that was part of the reason I was so drawn to bama. As I read more and more about it and realized how competitive bama was I decided not to rush due to my GPA. this was the only reason I didn't rush. I have a 2.5 high school GPA and didn't want to get dropped and have to go through that. I want to do spring rush. Can someone inform me how spring rush is down here? What do I have to do? Do you discourage spring rush and encourage me to rush as a sophomore?

2.5 is very, very low. Best to work on your grades. Pledge the library. Get decent grades and try next fall.
Spring rush - it's COB, all informal, and only a few sororities participate.
Truly - pay strict attention to getting decent grades first.

That is why I didn't rush because I wanted to work on my grades. Not trying to make up excuses here but I went to an extremely competitive high school and I have learning disabilities that contributed to my low GPA.

Then be sure to get recommendations which will explain your circumstances. But don't expect a pass. Those grades are dismal.

Rude? I'm not being rude. I'm being honest. Gradesa re the FIRST thing EVERY sorority looks at, and a 2.5 will not get you a look. Most of the sororities won't even look at you without a 3.0, some have a floor even higher.
And I'm a female.

jennie, every person who comes and rushes claims they went to a competitive high school, I promise you no one cares. If you have an LD, they also won't care, get involved on campus, and get your grades up.

I hate when people try to use a LD as a crutch. I have a LD and my GPA isn't anywhere near a 2.5. Stop making up excuses.

I got put into a special program because my learning disability... I was only diagnosed a year and a half ago. For years I struggled with school and they didn't know what was wrong with me. So don't judge or make assumptions unless you know the situation

You could look into Alpha Phi. They don't worry about grades.

Actually, there are several. Check out Zeta and Kappa. They don't care about grades either.

actually this year kappa dropped everyone lower than a 3.3 Gpa unless they were a legacy or they had to work very hard to get someone w/ a lower gpa if they really wanted them

G phi will take anyone, try them. They took girls through cob already, when girls drop they will do spring COB as well.

First, I'm really sorry for all of the rude comments. Second go online and fill out the COB interest form in the Fraternity and Sorority Life website. Only a few houses will pull girls who submit the form. Other houses only invite girls who are friends of members. This fall Phi Mu, ZTA, Alpha Phi, and Gamma Phi all did fall cob (which is rare.) Phi Mu, Alpha Pi, ADP, Pi Phi, DG, DZ, and Zeta all did Spring COB last year. I would recommend you to target these houses because it is likely some will participate in COB again. Also with quota being so high I'm curious if any other houses will do Spring COB. My best advise is to make friends with these girls because they are your way in. Also rushing as a sophomore isn't bad. There's actually a lower percentage of sophomores dropped than freshman; however, it is a lot more competitive. If any of those houses I listed interested you COB is the easiest way to get in. I know houses who take girls they dropped during formal rec for COB. Best of luck!
