pref rumor

by: Pnm

I have heard that if a house ranks you high enough in pref that no matter what the other house ranks you (unless it’s higher) or what you rank them, that house that ranked you really high gets you. Is this true and to what extent

No, it works like this: You rank your houses one and two and the houses rank all the pnm's they preffed. The algorithm starts at the top of a sorority's bid list and tries to match with the pnm's who ranked them first. If you are high enough on your number one's bid list to match with them before they reach quota, then you will get that bid. If that house reaches quota before they match with you, the algorithm then tries to match you with your number two house. If you are high enough on their bid list to match with them before they reach quota then you will get your number two. If both houses reach quota before they match with you, then you will still get a bid to either house as a quota addition. The algorithm considers your rank of the houses, your place on the houses' bid lists, and the sizes of the chapters when placing you as a quota addition. No one knows who quota additions are; they are bids just like everyone else's.

Thank you for that explanation, I appreciate it.

I know I probably shouldn’t be concerning myself with this right now, but I’m a little confused on quota additions. Does the “algorithm” solely decide what quota additions go where or do others have a say? Also, wouldn’t it be fairly obvious if say quota is 150 and chapter ABC has 155 that they took quota additions? What if every pnm (or more than anticipated) maximizes her pref options...then wouldn’t each chapter just be well over quota? Does every school do quota additions or just Bama because we’re so big? Sorry I know that’s a lot. TYIA

I’m not the girl who replied above, but yes girls would know which houses took quota additions. I think what she’s getting at is that if YOU, personally, were one of a house’s quota additions, no one, yourself included, would know that you were a quota addition and ranked too low on the house’s list to get a bid before they met quota. No one has any idea where you were ranked on the list except those on the recruitment team.

Also, any school that guarantees bids for girls who make it to pref and maximize their options would have to do quota additions because otherwise they wouldn’t be able to guarantee bids. The size of the Greek system has nothing to do with it. And yes, if every girl maximized her pref options, most houses would have to do quota additions.

Quota Additions are a national NPC thing and done at most campuses. Yes, it is obvious when a house has Quota Additions (so what?) and some chapters do take more of them. Chapters with high pnm return rates must offer fewer invitations from round to round, including to pref. So chapters with the higher numbers of pnm's at pref will take more quota additions. There are many statistics that are factored in to determine all this for every house at every round in a system called RFM. It is a well-thought-out process and there are multiple actual human beings overseeing and triple-checking everything at each stage, both from panhellenic and in each chapter.

In some chapters, legacies are automatically at the top of the bid list!

Yes most chapters (I say most cuz I know someone is gonna come here and tell me “not my chapter!”) if they’ve had a legacy all through recruitment they aren’t going to cut them at pref....the round to cut legacy’s is the second although some get released the first for some reason. Personally my chapter makes us keep legacy’s (except for grade risks) until round 2.

For a lot of houses if they want to drop a legacy it has to be before pref. If you’re there at pref, you’re in.

This is actually no longer true for a number of houses whose nationals have recently (in the past couple of months) gotten rid of recruitment legacy policies. These organizations are:

AOPi, Alpha Phi, DG, KD, Theta, ZTA

That's 1/3 of the NPC sororities at UA
