getting a bid at "formal rush"

I know that summer bidding is huge at Alabama for fraternities, but is there still a chance to get a bid from a house in the fall if I'm unable to go to any rush events? Or would it be smarter to wait until spring/ fall of sophomore year to rush once I meet everybody?
