Ranks are different at every school and don't translate to national ranks, sorry.

Does it really matter? All sororities have outstanding chapters somewhere, and all sororities have poorly performing chapters somewhere. It only matters at your school while you're in school. After that, and beyond that, it makes little difference.

no--it doesn't matter--i'm just curious is groups tend to have reputations for certain things in a positive way.

Regardless of Newsweek, there is NO SUCH THING as a national ranking. CASE CLOSED. Every response you see on here that gives one will be biased toward the higher ranked houses at the schools the one ranking is familiar with. I guarantee you that the top houses at Bama, Illinois, UCLA, UT, OU, UGA, Arizona, Nebraska, etc. are all going to be different. A top house at one school is the one that had to close for low numbers at another. It is a complete MYTH that there are certain houses that are always or even usually top tier.

You can look at total numbers or number of chapters, but the smaller houses will point out that they are more selective about chapter placement.

You can look at philanthropy numbers but everyone will tell you that it is easier to raise money for a big national entity such as Make a Wish than it is for a string of local causes with different names that share a common commitment.

You can look at foundation gifts, but certain fraternities and sororities emphasize giving at the national level and some emphasize giving at the local or philanthropical level.

And btw, you can also count on the fact that everyone who answers this inane question will put his or her own house in the top tier nationally.

on another page and I agree. I added some additional comments and Alpha Gam, which the original poster forgot.

XO, DDD, DG, Kappa, Pi Phi, Theta= National powerhouses. Can't pick one out for better than another.-Huge alumni support, money, tradition, national name, and strong all over the country.

ADPi, Alpha Phi, AXO, Zeta= Well known nationally, but slightly less than the top tiers.-A lot of money, tradition, etc, really strong in specific areas and well known other places.

AOPi, DZ, GPB, KD, Phi Mu, SK, AGD= Middle tier of nationals. Known but only in certain areas.-Powerhouses in certain regions, and somewhat weak outside of those regions. But their overwhelming support from their strong region keeps them going.

AEPhi, AZD, DPhiE, SDT, SSS= Heard of them, but weak nationally.-You know the name, but they seem to have tradition or prominence nationally. Perhaps at a few schools they stand out, but mostly just everywhere.

ASA, AST, PhiSS, ThetaPA= Sorry, who?-Literally no clue who these sororities among large schools.

It's important to remember this takes in to account EVERYWHERE and not just your school or the SEC. Stellar groups here or SEC are weak elsewhere and weak groups here are big nationally. But overall I think this is pretty accurate.

I posted the list on this page and I guess I should clarify my sorority is not listed as a powerhouse. It is in the 2nd line and I'm aware that while we are very strong in places and I love it we are not an "SEC group" which does lower national standing. Honestly the first 2 lines are excellent nationally, you could make some argument for switching the 2nd line groups with the 1st line and I wouldn't think you were crazy. And the middle groups are still amazing but I agree they more regional or not a stand out everywhere. I think people who disagree which they were listed in first line and can't see a true reason for not being, when it's actually pretty accurate.

accurate and spammed all over this site. Wish people would stop posting it repeatedly, but it's just too much fun I guess.

think this is pretty accurate. I agree line 2 could be swapped some with line 1, primarily ADPi and Zeta. But I couldn't pick one from the first line that seems weaker. And to people saying ranks are different elsewhere, that's the point. Just because a sorority is insanely strong on the west coast doesn't give them a great national rep even if everyone from over there would put them as #1 (totally an example, I don't mean any certain house). I mean Pi Phi is top mid to mid here and at Auburn, and DG and Theta are both bottom here and Mid and bottom at Auburn, but I don't disagree that these 3 are nationally some of the stronger groups even though they aren't in Alabama. Vice versa I don't think XO, DDD, and Kappa are top nationally just because they are top here. It's all about what the person listed: money, alumni support, well known name, and I'd also argue philanthropy/funds (NOT that groups not listed first don't do A TON of great philanthropy).

(Not ordered in tiers)
Pi Phi, Kappa, Theta, TriDelt, ChiO, DG
Zeta, AXO, ADPi, APhi, GPhi
KD, Phi Mu, DZ, AOPi, AGD, AZD, SK
AEPhi, DPhiE, SDT, SSS
ASA, AST, PSS, TPA
The other wasn't that far off, but based on what I've seen looking at different regions this is a little closer.

I saw it too. I also saw all the disagreements that people had written about the rankings. It was obviously written by someone who put her house in the top and went from there. If you have cousins or friends anywhere else in the country you know this list is bogus.
