old row vs new row?

by: GreekDad

My daughter just went through Rush and today was the first I heard of the concept of ‘Old Row versus New Row’. She tried to explain it, but it really didn’t make a whole lot of sense to me. I know this is an Bama thing and googled it and it took me to this site so I figured I would ask. Can someone explain to me what makes one better then the other?

Thanks!

Old row - Mercedes
New row - Infinity

Old row is about tradition and the houses that Alabama’s best local/Reginald girls want.

Honestly, if you didn’t know about it, it doesn’t matter. The actual experience is pretty much the same in all houses. NR just mostly lacks “those girls” from certain areas of Alabama

Ok. Thank you! She joined the same sorority as her mother which I am happy about, but she said it would never be considered the ‘top’ house based on where the physical house used to be back in the day. Sounded a little off to me, but I get every school has its thing. Appreciate the insight. Hope y’all had a great day.

The original fraternities at UA were the original old tow. They selected sororities to join them as old row. It has nothing to do with how old they are at bama. There were just those fraternize favorites. There are still some events that only old tow can participate in, but this isn’t that important anymore.

Old row are still the top tier. Not that it matters. Plenty of good new row houses. All offer the same great Greek experience \n\n\n\n\nOld row houses:
AXO
Phi Mu
Kappa
XO
AGD
KD
DDD

Or is mainly Alabama girls, nr is more from east coast and others out of state. Old row thinks they are better then new row. Old row more tradition lots of girls in a house generation after generation. It’s a southern thing.

Apologies Dad, but you have reached an inappropriate site. Try Wikipedia or Greek Chat and please do not look to this site for true information. This site is controlled by anonymous posters who can be very rude and unkind as they try to influence others on the status of different sororities. Nothing on this site is fact based.

It’s all good but thanks for the fair warning. I know everyone is protective of their house and I don’t blame them. We all love the letters we wear and I told my little girl to be proud of where she came from and proud of the house she now belongs to. A house doesn’t necessarily make a home, but the people inside it make it one. Glad she found hers and hope others have as well. Being Greek made college a lot more fun.

GreekDad, you daughter is incorrect. It has nothing to do with the location of the house now or then. Only prestige.

And yes, lots of misinformation on this site, but also plenty of people that are willing to give honest, correct info

Glad your daughter is happy in NR.

She could have been confusing Old Row and First Circle, and First Corcle referred to 3 houses that were located on a cul de sac (therefore the “circle”) which are KD (this is a big deal to them because they were the first), DDD, and AGD.

Old Row geographically refers to fraternities and the sororities they chose to associate with at the time. OR sororities does not have a geographical tie.
