chances

Ok. I only got invited back to 3 houses today which surprised me bc I had so many actives talk to me in almost every house, scream my name, say that I was perfect, etc. I know a lot of that is probably typical rush stuff but I was shocked today. My GPA is above a 3.2. I didn't have a lot of recs bc I don't know anyone in sorrorities. Now I'm afraid I am going to be part of the 10% who don't get a bid. Does this mean I am not going to get a bid? I need to know my chances from real actives not moms, alumns, or trolls. Thanks

No, it doesn't mean that.

Many of the girls who don't "get a bid" actually drop out of recruitment of their own accord because they're disappointed with their options or purposefully leave houses off their MRABA.

You only need one house. Focus on that and stay positive.

Me: OOR, very few Recs. I had heavy cuts, and had only one house left for Pref. It wasn't the house I thought I wanted after IWTs, but after Pref, I knew it was absolutely the house for me. Getting dropped sucks, but it only takes one house.

Besides, I felt pretty lucky on Pref night. Some of my friends with multiple houses were freaking out about which house they'd get, and whether or not they'd get their second or third choice. Me? I was chillin in my room listening to their worries, but mentally I was trying to decide which shorts would look best with the colors of my new sorority.

Yeah, it was sad not to have that "Surprise" moment on Bid Day, but that was over in seconds and I loved the rest of the day.

Good luck! Remember, it only takes one!

I didn't think you were guaranteed a bid if you made it to pref. Are you?

If you Pref a house, list them, and sign the form, you WILL get a bid from that house.

If you Pref two houses, list them both, and sign the form, you will get a bid from one of those two houses. It doesn't promise to be your first, but one of them.

If you have two houses and don't list all the options, you can get dropped. It's called suiciding, and it's only worth it if you will absolutely drop out if you get your second option.

When I rushed, I went from 16 houses to 3 despite having great conversations in all the houses, speaking to important actives in multiple houses, having a 3.5 GPA, and a handful of really great extracurriculars under my belt. I can't even explain how awful I felt when I opened my schedule on Philanthropy, my heart literally sank and I felt so discouraged.

Looking back, I think my biggest issue was not having enough recs. I think I had maybe 5 or 6 recs in total which does not fly here. Mind you, I'm from the NorthEast and had no idea that recs were such a big deal here. And from what you explained, it seems like that's the same issue you're facing. Recs are important and even though a girl may be a great PNM, a house won't invite her back if she doesn't have a rec unless she's a top PNM.

Do I think you'll end up in the 10% that don't receive bids? Very unlikely. If you keep going through this week you're more than likely to receive a bid. Mind you, most of the girls who don't receive bids are girls who dropped from rush themselves. And then most of the rest of the girls who don't receive bids are big grade/reputation risks.

My best advice from someone who knows exactly what you're going through:
Be positive. This is YOUR rush experience. Don't let what's going on with other girls get you down. Does it suck being cut so hard after just one round? Yes. Does it suck that recs can make or break you? Yes. BUT if you genuinely want to experience sorority life then keep going. Go to your remaining houses and put your best foot forward and be happy that there are houses here that want you. And know that there are other girls who are in the same situation you're in. It can be discouraging when you look around and see a bunch of pretty girls getting full or close to full schedules back and bragging about it but there are a lot of girls who see very harsh cuts all throughout the week. There's nothing wrong with you and you shouldn't take it personally, rush here is very competitive and there are only so many girls one house can take. That being said, be positive and keep going. Good luck :)

My family and I don't know any people in sorrorities. I am OOR/OOS

You'd be surprised. Women OOS/OOR don't always flaunt that they are Greek. I don't. Ask teachers, bosses, friends of parents, parents of friends, church folk, etc. Ask them if they are Greek or if they know anyone Greek. Plus contacting your local Alumnae Panhellenic groups. It's called networking. And lots of girls do it who also don't "know any sorority women" and somehow, they get recs for 75% of the houses. Put forth the effort.

I was down to 4 houses in philanthropy and 2 by sisterhood and kept those 2 for pref. I was a huge grade risk. I got my second choice on bid day. I was so devastated and really contemplated dropping. Once I have my sorority a chance though, i completely fell in love with it. Just remember, that it only takes one. The sororities here are so big that you’ll find your people no matter which house you’re in. We all have swaps, study hours, philanthropy events and date parties. Every house has smart girls, fun girls, pretty girls, and involved girls. And every house has their own cons and problems too. The three houses that invited you back gave you invitations because they saw something in you. Just put your best foot forward and express how grateful you are to be back, and I’m sure you’ll end up with a bid.

Out of curiosity, did you get recs for the 3 houses you have left?

I know it is terrifying seeing only 3 on your list so early in the week, but don't let that get you down! That is 3 houses that are still interested and want you. Remember that cuts are not personal 99% of the time, especially if you don't really have connections. It is all a numbers game and there are only so many spots in some houses. You should be fine as long as you keep an open mind and keep your spirits high! Good luck!! Enjoy the rest of the week even if you don't get your 1st choice. Give it a chance and you should be happy in the end!
