top house perks?
by: pnmThere are obviously houses that are top teir but what does that mean? Does it get you any privledges other than the reputation or are their benefits that go along with it?
#4by: Top for a reason
Ignore the idiots above and let me be honest with you.
Being honest with you — top sororities typically pair up with top fraternities for swaps and parties. Top fraternities don’t usually swap with bottom houses, but they will with mid tier.
Top houses can get you into positions with SGA and any other club or honor society on campus moreso than cotton houses can. That may not be important to you, but if it is take note.
Top houses have much stronger alumni groups and connections. This may benefit you when job searching after graduation. And even before then with internships.

I graduated last year and I got my job because of my sorority. And I wasn’t a Theta or Gamma Phi. I was in an Old Row house with a large national presence and it helped me get my foot in the door with my employer.
So yes, there is some truth to the Old Row brand. If it’s not for you, then great - do your own thing. But you can at least acknowledge that it’s a real thing.

I am also a Bama alumna that has lived in DC and Boston. Yes, both cities have great Bama alumni groups, but NO ONE talks about what sorority you were in, we all are just so happy to be watching winning football each week all the way to to January! A little research can easily and quickly tell you who is best in NE and the Ivy league.
#7by: Perks
Your experience is not really going to be different
And, the sorority you get in doesn’t make you smarter, more likely to be involved in other activities, nicer or richer.
OR housss brand recognition in the state - basically mom can feel prouder when she tells her friends you are in one of those houses. . If your mom doesn’t feel that way, the perks are pretty much of no consequence to you.
Plenary of mid to lower ranked houses have large alumni and national organizations.

Some of this is true and some isn't. "Top" houses are those with select girls from Alabama. If you live here and don't plan to move, that makes a difference. If you're more open, it means nothing.
The boys in the top frats are generally not ones that I would even consider seriously. They're generally a lot of overweight pasty guys who like to lord it over "their women." That's repulsive to me.
No house gets you into an honor society. Period. Anyone can be in a club. As to SGA and other choice orgs, a top house can only help you if there is a person from your particular house in a leadership role in the organization you aspire to. And if that person wants you on board. Happens much less than the person above suggests.
The "top" houses at Alabama (there are many threads about this) are ones that are lower houses literally everywhere else in the country. So if you're only looking in Alabama for a job, a top house won't hurt. If you're looking outside of Alabama, you might want something else -- Theta and G Phi come to mind. There are houses that are strong nationally that are not top here.
