joining sigma kappa??

They are great nationally and being a part of a new chapter is probably something a lot of actives wish they had the chance to do. Being able to make the chapter what you want it to be is not something a lot of people get to do

SK reps will be interviewing potential charter members and they are not going to take just anybody for numbers' sake. If you have leadership experience and demonstrated maturity level then you will be of interest to them.

Pros:
- You will have significantly more leadership opportunities.
- You will have more say in how to shape the chapter.
- You will be a founding chapter member.

Cons:
- They are in an old house and will not make plans to build a new one for at least the next few years.
- Lack of social events.
- Lack of structure.
- Very volatile.
- Not established.

As an active going into my senior year I can honestly say that I would rather join my last option house of the 16 NPC already on campus over SK. That's just MY view.

I would rather be in the bottom house than take a risk on SK. Any girls with decent grades and clean reps are not going SK. They’ll go with an already established sorority. And fraternities are not going to be interested in swaps with a new house unless the frat is a bottom house with limited social options.

I doubt this is what you wanted to hear, but I just wanted to be honest with you.

Its a good option for older girls who didn't ever join a house and for freshmen who got cross cut. It's a small house with a small national presence, but it will give you the greek experience which living in an apartment won't.

some of these negative comments are ridiculous. Sigma Kappa will not be taking "rejects"! This is an exciting time at the university of Alabama to add another sorority to its Greek life! At this point this sorority is reputation free! Give it a chance y'all. There are a lot of amazing, pretty, smart girls on this campus who could make this colonization amazing. And they will be founding members of a sorority! Thats exciting and takes courage and drive. Most likely they will have a tight knit first sisterhood because it is not as large at first and doesn't have preformed cliques! How about supporting them and hoping for the best! I personally am hoping they get a kick ass pledge class and are all happy and love the opportunity they have to a role in being founders. Good Luck Sigma Kappa. You're gonna be just fine. Ignore the haters.

Colonies usually LOOOVE accomplished upperclassmen who for whatever reason never went through rush before or didn’t pledge. They want to establish with a good reputation and need strong leaders so juniors and even seniors who are involved with the more prestigious campus orgs will be sought after. They will likely also give preference to legacies who are well qualified since that might mean more family support / financial support for the new colony.

Being in a colony is not for the faint of heart. You are starting a chapter with no traditions (of course SK has traditions but not the special existing house trads), no big sis (you’ll get a “twin”), no house, no reputation, no nothing - and it’s up to you and your sisters (99% of whom will be complete strangers) to come together and make a sisterhood. You are starting, not joining. This is not a negative, just need to have the mindset that it is a lot of work and they need passionate women who are on a mission!

But can be incredibly rewarding to be part of this special group. Just know you likely won’t see the fruits of your labor until long after you’ve graduated.

DG recolonized in 2011 so it's harder to look at how that went, but a girl I went to high school with a girl who joined XO at georgia southern in 2016 and she has had a great time and doesn't seem to have any less of an experience than I do having joined an established chapter here. You may not get a big, but you do get to be a founder of your family tree that great great great great great grandlittles will trace back to years from now. You may not have a permanent house, but with all the construction so many other chapters have been in swing houses recently that it's basically the norm here. Getting on exec or coming up as a leader will be easier than in the more established chapters, and SK is going to want to take upperclassmen with campus leadership experience who will be a huge help to freshman that want to get involved on campus. and like someone said earlier, because GLO and the other chapters wants this to be successful they will have a well attended philanthropy and a good social schedule to get up and going.

Is it for everyone, no. Will they take everyone interested, no. But if you want to join greek life and it just hasn't worked out yet, this is a cool opportunity. And if you don;t think it's for you, then go through formal next year.
