rec letters

by: hi

i was rushing at a different school this past week and only got to day one before i packed up my stuff and went home because i absolutely hated the school. This summer i got a good amount of rec letters that i would have liked to put to use. if i transfer to bama next year would i be able to count those recs toward the sororities there as well? or would i have to get them to basically write me a second one?

Are you like, okay? Lmao. Your rec writers sent your recs TO THAT SCHOOL. You cannot ever physically possess them yourself. You’ll have to get your rec writers to write new ones for Alabama. And you better do something meaningful while you’re not in college. I don’t think you’re really cut out for sorority rush if you can’t tough through something you don’t like. Everything you’ve said raises so many questions. Why did you apply to that school before visiting it? Why did you decide to enroll once you got in before you visited? You dropped out before you even started because you don’t know what you want and can’t make up your mind. A sorority wouldn’t want someone who will drop as soon as they get their bid because they “hate” it without giving it a chance. Clearly, a troll.

I have so many questions about this. Did you not visit your school before attending? How could you decide that school wasn't for you when you had only been there one day? and school hadn't actually started yet?

I have a few things for you: firstly, to answer your question, yes you have to get them to write you a new rec next summer. Your recs from this year only apply to that school and for rush fall of 2018.

Next: going to college is HARD. Like harder than you probably expected. You are away from home, probably for the first time. You are surrounded by strangers and you are in a completely new environment. Living in a dorm, having to be independent, maybe having to fend for yourself financially, etc. it is crazy and a huge change. But most everyone who attends college goes through this. You have to stick it out and get through the hard phase to get to the good part.

I don't want to tell you that you were wrong for leaving, because we only know what you told us. And you may have been 100% certain in your heart that that was not where you were supposed to be. But in the future, I would stick it out and try your best to make it work at least for a semester. See how classes go, see how rush goes, see how you do at a big/small college, at whatever distance from home, etc. and if you need to adjust, then do so. But give it a chance.

I also echo what @yeah OKAY said about doing something worthwhile this year. If you take a year off and plan on rushing next year, I would do something other than just sit at home this year. Get involved in something.
