overweight

by: pnm

What are my chances of getting a bid to a house if I'm overweight? I have a good gpa and connections and recs, my only drawback is my weight problem. I just need some reassurance that I'm not going to get dropped by all the houses right after IWT... I've already registered for rush so I'm going to do it for sure, but I'm just worried that I've made a mistake and that I'm going to regret doing this because I'm going to be cut just for my weight problem :(

Obviously I can't speak for every house on the row, but I hope that more houses than not are like mine and they don't give a dam.n. If you have a lot to offer our sisterhood, you get invited back.

From what I’ve seen, prepare yourself for big cuts the first round. That will be where the superficial cuts come in (although good grades could definitely keep you for another round), but after that you will be going back to houses who care about more than what you look like.
Don’t be discouraged if you face deep cuts at first, be excited about the houses that wanted you back and that the girls you talked to in that house advocated for you because they wanted you in their sisterhood!

Unless you weigh enough to get your own tlc special you definitely won’t get cut from every house. Like above said there will be superficial cuts and you should expect them after first round but you will still have amazing houses left that aren’t superficial which is better anyways. Good luck with rush and don’t be discouraged!

I was probably 30-40 pounds overweight when I rushed which definitely is a hefty amount especially when half the girls rushing are stick thin. I'm from the NorthEast, went to a great school, had a 3.5 unweighted GPA, had a handful of great leadership extracurriculars, and I had a few recs. I was cut from 16 houses to 4 after IWTs. My stomach literally dropped and I was so discouraged especially considering all the conversations I had were great.

Looking back, I think my weight did hold me back. Like someone said above, cuts can be very superficial and if you aren't bringing something else to the table then expect harsh cuts.

My best advice to you is to get recs for all the houses. I only had recs for a handful of houses and if I could go back I would've definitely gotten recs for all the houses. And also just be confident in yourself. Get some killer outfits, cute shoes, and talk to these girls as if you've known them for years. If you act shy and nervous then the cuts are only going to get worse. And finally, trust the process. A house that cuts you based on weight is a house no one should want to be in. I've found a home and everyone else can too if you put your best self out there. Relax, enjoy rush, and get excited for your future home.

The cuts were probably just as likely due to the lack of recommendation letters. There are all types of girls in every house! Be yourself and look for the home that accepts you for yourself. If there are superficial cuts, you wouldn't want to be in that house anyways!

^^^ I agree 100% about the recs probably playing a large role in the cuts.

Like I said, you still have time to get recs so if you don't already you probably should.

I had the same exact situation except I’m from the south and had recs for all houses— I was cut to 1 for pref. It’s really hard and a little demoralizing but you have to just want to be in any sorority.

I disagree on one thing— I would still have taken a bid to some of the houses that cut me for weight. They have to get rid of girls somehow, and to be honest my house would cut for weight if our return rates were higher. I just don’t think it’s that personal.

eh. shouldn't be too bad. you'll probably be dropped from the more appearance conscious houses but you have to understand that those houses are built on looks and they'd literally be nothing without them.

if you want a sleeker look, try spanx under your dress!

not for me personally, but honestly every active in every house is different and people vote based on your convos so it really depends on the active you get. Like a superficial one would cut you and rate you low but it depends on the active not the house in general if you feel me. Sorry I'm high

You will find a house that loves you for YOU! You will always end up in a house where you belong, even if you don’t like it at first or get cut from some you like. Remember that the girls that choose your really WANT YOU for YOU. Don’t be discouraged. Just trust the process of rush.
