Hi Ladies,
I am an adult risk adviser for one of the sororities. If your organization is insured my MJ Insurance, as most are, they have determined that if a bunch of women from the same sorority gather (anywhere)it becomes an official sorority party even if no checklist was submitted for insurance coverage by the chapter. If something happens while you are drinking, your house and every member of your chapter can be libel, and since you are drinking without claiming it as a house event and submitting proper checklist/insurance paperwork, your chapter is probably completely uninsured. You would be much better off to create a formal chapter-wide event with alcohol at the off campus gathering place to make sure you are insured.

If anyone ever doubted whom is really on GR!

Wow. Thanks for coming out Miss Risk Advisor.

We now understand you are denying insurability for events at our apartment and our "second" houses. I bet the leases are signed by an LLC! \n\n\n\n\n

If you really are a risk advisor, wouldn’t you know that the word is “liable” and not “libel?”

You smell like a Bham mom to me.

No... really a risk adviser (who can not spell). No B'ham mom would know about MJ Insurance. I am just informing you of what your insurance company has determined: if there is a gathering of sisters, even if unofficial, it becomes an sorority event. If you are breaking sorority rules, i.e. drinking without filing as an event with alcohol for coverage, the sorority will not have insurance and can not protect you or your sorority. I think this policy update came out last year. If something happens, you, your sisters, and your advisers can all be sued . Just sharing because I dont want to be sued and lose my house. Don't wish the same for your parents. FYI, sororities are mostly sued by their own members.

I mean it’s nice of you to remind us of the legal jargon but it’s kind of pointless. There are literally hundreds of pregames off campus for sorority date parties every Thursday night that aren’t registered and that’s never going to change.

It’s against the rules in my sorority and I assume in many others to legitimize events that have alcohol besides date parties and swaps (they like to pretend we don’t drink), so as actives we’re kind of stuck between a rock and a hard place.

In any case, nationals would never let us legitimize an off campus house.
