I'm a ppm and I've just seen a lot of people posting lately about the cost of greek life, I want to know where I fall with the rest of you. I can't tell if this is a realistic option for me even though where I come from my family is considered pretty well off. Not "go buy a hermes belt" for one day of recruitment well off though....

I doubt this is likely to give you an honest break down on GR.

But honestly, since you are asking, you are probably going to be surprised by the wealth and money girls have.

There are a notable number of new German cars and Range Rovers in the Tut lot, too many Tori Burch sandals at recruitment to count, Yurman bracelets, weekend trips to games, Flights, trips etc.

I didn't grow up "wanting" - Far OOS - parents belonged to the right golf club, Private school, etc.

My parent as are in your "top" income listing. But I am often amazed by what girls spend here. Lots of them spending way more than me!

Doesn't mean you "must" have it. But if you want to know where you'll stand, if you have to ask.....as they say.

my parents together make 300,000 but with three kids in college and in greek life, that doesn't even make you rich!!!

Agree with #3.

It's going to amaze you how so many young girls at UA have so much... And there are girls in EVERY house that have daddy's credit card and buy literally whatever they want whenever they want.

Freshman year, I knew this girl who maxed out her dad's credit card in one month. His limit? 10k. And her dad was mad but all she got was a slap on the wrist.

You'll see a lot of girls who drive really nice cars while their wrists are covered in Yurmans.

10k is nothing. I thought you were gonna say 200k or something around that. I guess to the average person 10k is a lot but there's bags that are more than 10k

Honestly I've witnessed some ridiculous spending scenarios. I grew up pretty well off and I am pretty well off now but there were a couple years where my family struggled. Obviously not severely I still lived in a comfortable place and my siblings and I all got to go to private school but we were never allowed to spend extreme amounts of money. I've seen girls spend 3k on daddy's credit card in just one day. My parents didn't give me 3k of spending money to get through the SEMESTER. But on the other hand I have very very wealthy friends who's parents don't give them a dime and make them work for their money. It really depends on ur parents. There is a specific girl in my sorority though who is only friends with the insanely wealthy girls (she makes it known) who are walking around in yurmans and hermes bracelets though. I absolutely hate that girl

Honestly some of the ridiculous spending and need to show off to impress people surprised me when I got here.
My dad makes $450,000 a year (my mom stays at home) and we live in a normal house, drive functional but not flashy cars, and I could not image my parents letting me casually drop a couple thousand dollars in a week (I don’t even spend that much in a semester).
I think a lot of the spending here is honestly really tacky

I agree with the person who said it’s a southern thing to spend numerous amounts of money. I’m from the north and as many know people in the north tend to make more money than southerners (all relative not always true but for the most part) and my parents would never allow me to spend that much money. they give me what I need and they provide for me more than they should but I do not drive a flashy car or wear extremely expensive clothing etc. It’s crazy what you see some of these southern belles doing here. I mean hey good for them but that just wasn’t how I was raised.

I'm from the North as well (Chicago burbs) and while my parents make a combined income over 7 figures, you would probably never know it. We live in a nice house, drive practical cars, and attended private schools, but don't go overboard on clothes and other toys. I tend to think the girls from the North are more grounded and practical, maybe it's a Midwest thing or just the people I surround myself with.

There are plenty of southerners who live like you described, they’re just much less flashy so obviously they stand out less than the people who throw their money around. For example I just found out one of my sisters’ dads (from the south) is an exec of a major Fortune 500 company but I never would have known if someone hadn’t told me. She lives like any middle class person.

Unrelated to your comment but I’m from Texas and people think spending here is bad— it’s NOTHING compared to what goes on at UT. Oh my God it’s unreal. It’s like the same attitude, but with more money to back it up.
