how do houses judge you??

by: PNM

Sorry if I sound a little lost, but I’m an out of state student who’s contemplating going through rush, and I’m just wondering how houses judge you initially and how they judge you each round?? Do they judge you based on looks and GPA the first round, then what else? Detailed and honest answers would be super helpful, thanks!

My house first round is grade cuts and based on how the active you talked to scored or rated you

Yeah a lot of it is honestly just the conversation. Did they feel like they clicked with you? Did you have high school involvement or things you want to get involved in at school that you sound passionate about? Weee you awkward and hard to hold a conversation with? Did you only want to talk about partying and boys?
Once you get past cuts for grades and girls who don’t have recs, it’s realy just about if you can look put together (which you don’t have to be a stunner to do) and have a fun and interesting conversation

In my house the criteria we’re technically supposed to look for is essentially about if you look put together, have at least decent grades and seem like you’ll do well academically, if you can hold a conversation and have good social skills, if you seem like you’ll pay your bills (more about looking for red flags that you WONT), and if you seem genuinely interested in philanthropy and getting involved on campus
At the end of the day it’s basically just it we had a good time talking with you and if you stood out. For girls with no connections the cuts can honestly be pretty arbitrary, don’t think that if you got cut it means the active was miserable your whole conversation

IWT we cut low GPAs
Sisterhood we cut bad reputations, awkward conversations
Philanthropy we cut based on looks, awkward conversations
Bid list based on who we think would fit in the best.

All of the above is true for all or most houses. I will also add just because you are not invited back does not mean you were judged poorly. The active you were talking to may have loved you and thought you would fit great but she may not have the pull to get you higher on the list. More influential sisters may have put their rush crushes above you. You may have been one of 5-6 awesome girls that your team met that day. Multiply that by every team and then look at the number of spots and odds are you will get released from houses where they loved you. This is not a reflection on you at all just a reality of so many girls. Be thankful for the houses that loved you and invited you back and realize the ones that didn't are missing out on getting to know you better. Knowing these realities of our huge recruitment will help you manage expectations and be grateful for what you have on your card each day.
