Do houses look at how much your parents make? Coming far oos how would they even be able to find out? I am very classy and well put together but I fear I'm not quite as wealthy as all the other girls. Is this going to be a problem if I want old row?

Nah. Only issue if there are signs that you could drop after a year or two for money.

If you are from a family that could and has bought you a vehicle worth at least $40K at graduation from high school, you are sorority well off at Bama. If you already had a $40K vehicle like for your 16th birthday, then you are sorority wealthy at Bama. I know a lot of kids don't bring cars to school and stuff like that, but this is just an example to allow you to compare and contrast. Absolutely a lot of OOS are very well off and even wealthy back home. No doubt. But living in the nice suburbs of Philly or Seattle is about the same in terms of real income as living in the nicer areas of Birmingham, Mobile, Montgomery and Huntsville Alabama. What a $400k family income can buy in the Southern states is a lot more than it can buy in New York, that is for sure. So if daddy makes a $1 million a year in Los Angeles, the actual wealth you have is probably about like the kids in Mountain Brook and the other good suburbs in Alabama. And one of the posts above is absolutely right that the truly wealthy, like really rich, usually opt to go to private schools. That said, there are some seriously rich kids at BAma and they are scattered all around, including new row. Some kids want that SEC experience and the sorority life, etc.

Honestly, the only time money really is an issue during rush is if a PNM says something to an active during rush that makes the active think the PNM might not be around long before she drops because she was never really able to afford dues in the first place
If you are from far oos and have money you are probably actually a lot wealthier than a majority of the “rich” southern girls because the cost of living is lower down here.

If they were looking at my parent’s income bracket I think I would have popular with certain houses during rush lol

it doesn't matter how much money you have, it matters how much you appear to have.

i'll share two secrets.

(1) buy lulu shorts and wear it every day. but also go in their dressing room and take a pic of like 8 of the same pair on the chair and save on ur phone and every like 2.5 weeks put it on your instagram story "omg my fav shorts, had to buy like 8 pairs"

(2) go to a cheap vacation place like orange beach. bring 2 bikinis. take a bunch of pics. only post pics of bikini #1 and tag that sht as Italy on your instagram pics. wait like a month. post pics from bikini #2 and tag that as also italy. people will be like omg weren't you there like last month

To go these lengths to lie about wealth is so sad. Just be yourself and be a real person and youll fit in where you need to.

Not recommemded!

So you have an insta that shows you in Italy - if by chance some active makes the connection and she's actually been to Italy (which isn't unrealistic), or if you decide to run with it an lie about being there - you are going to appear like an idiot after a few questions about things like where you visited, stayed, etc, and if you got embarrassed by ordering a cappuccino after noon - something Italians never do!

The comment about "fit" is most accurate.

There are a million subtle ways to flush out this type of BS it's not recommended. \n\n\n\n\n

HATE these stupid money threads. As so much stupid stuff gets posted....

1. Does your parents wealth correlate to if you will have a "good rush": - yes, it's correlated but not a given. Like it or not.

2. Does wealth guarantee that you get your top house - no.

3. Does any house require you to be a trust fund baby - no, not even close.

4. Are there trust fund babies in every house - there is in mine (not a top house) and am sure in every house.

5. Are ther girls of "working parents" (school teachers, accountants, engineers, salespeople) in every house - yes.

Agree with the comments that it's fit that matters and that faking is a bad strategy!

Nothing more to be said.

PhiMu has a bit of a reputation for crossing the line relative to asking inappropriate questions about wealth. Suspicion is they have a few members faking it and making it through extended credit cards and student loans.

Well there's probably some truth to this in our houses, they seem to set the bar in wanting everyone to believe they really have it.
